  • Headed up to richmond this week to pick up a pair of axles. Specs:

Front Dana 44 out of a J10. Chromo outers, ford flat top knuckles with one ton high steer. 5.13s and aussie locker, setup for a 3 link. I dont need this axle but the guy selling them wont separate the two. Ill probably take the high steer and what have you and sell the axle to recoup some money back, or save it for spares or a future build

Rear dana 44 out of an isuzu. Same setup as front, aussie, 5.13s, chromos, discs. Some sort of aftermarket cover. Has 1" Spacers since its a tad narrower then my front which will work perfect. Slap this bitch under my jeep and call it a day, have a locked rear axle ready to wheel again.

Then ill just have a few odds and ends to get taken care of on the jeep and ill be ready hopefully for a full year of wheeling in 2011 with a reliable rear axle.

Also pickup my welder this week.

          • Tearing into this thing this week. Pulling the axles, rears gone, fronts getting some chages in the form of new hubs and new steering but going back in. Fixing the tcase linkage, fixing the brakes, new tires maybe, fixing the interior, putting a new rear window in the hatch finally, maybe building a tool box for the rear.

My question is, my jackstands dont even come close to reaching the bottom of the frame ( 27 inches roughly). Can I use cinder blocks under neath the jack stands to gain some height out of them. Is that safe to do?

            • If you use more than one per stand I don't see why not. One per could be kinda sketchy...

                • POS dana 44 is gone

new rear axle will be here as soon as the tax refund gets here, as well as the 37 creepies... still trying to decide if i wanna get 35s, 36s, or 37s for the creepies. All are pretty much the same price. Id probably break less on 35s but having 37s would just be cool. I dunno.

I stopped DDing it in April. I got the camaro and the jeep just sat, after driving the camaro, the jeep was no longer fun to drive on the road at all. I drove it every now and again, but sometime after the rausch trip in april I cracked the rear diff cover open and saw all the broken metal in the diff and new that it was coming apart and I needed to find a new solution for a rear axle. I plan on DDing the jeep once I get it fixed because I fucking hate the camaro and want it gone. I also think if I through 37s on it , it might actually be more streetable anyway and will bring my RPMS down. 513s and worn down 35s had my rpms up there.

I went and gave the guy a deposit on them to hold em for me. I just need to go back up to his house when I have the rest of the moolah. I only need the rear axle but he wont split em up so im gonna just have to try and sell the front axle on pirate or something.

                          • I would go 35s as well. locked front and rear I dont think there is much more you could do on 37s than on 35s. and it will be less prone to breaking.

97 TJ that I think is pretty neat.

                            • Only reason I wanted to step up to 37s is it would bring my RPM's down a lot on the highway. 35s and 513s and i was running around 2400 on the high way

after playing around with the RPM calculator, there is only about a 200 RPM difference between 37s and 35s.

When determining the breaking point of an axle when talking about tire size, what is the thing that matters most, the weight of the tire (35vs37?), does the 2 inch difference really make much of a difference when determining what will break the axle?
