  • I left Canyon Village, WY around 630am on July 21st with the goal of hiking the Dogshead trail to Shoshone Lake and back via the Lewis River Channel trail.

The Dogshead trail head is around 43 miles south of Canyon Village.

Shoshone Lake (elevation 7,795 feet) is the second largest body of water in Yellowstone National Park.
It is the largest backcountry lake in the lower 48 states. The lake can not be reached via road.

    Left at 745am.

4.6 miles into the hike we arrived at Shoshone Lake.

JR set a blistering pace as we hiked the first 4.6 miles to the lake in 90 minutes, which is under 20 minutes a mile. We only stopped twice for a few seconds to apply mosquito repellent.

    • The Shoshone Lake ranger station.

A few more shots of Shoshone Lake. We stayed there for 45 minutes until 1000am and then continued on.

4.8 miles into the hike a trail sign.

      • 6 miles into the hike I spotted this black bear walking along the other side of the Lewis River Channel.

The bear decided to cross the river or channel or whatever it is immediately after passing us.

        • 7 miles into the hike a view looking downstream towards Lewis Lake & then a view looking upstream towards Shoshone Lake.

7.5 miles into the hike Jackie realized she lost a water bottle within the last mile. We back tracked for the mile and didn't find it, but decided to break for lunch near some fresh black bear shit that wasn't on the trail earlier.

Some people on a canoe in the river at the 7.5 mile mark or 9.5 miles into our hike.

              • On the rocks.....

10.5 miles into the hike we walked around 100 yards out to a peninsula, which is where Lewis River Channel ends and Lewis Lake begins.
The first shot is on the peninsula looking towards Lewis Lake.
The second shot "closed to motor boating beyond this point."

11 miles into the hike on the shore of Lewis Lake.
Lewis Lake (elevation 7,782 feet) is the third largest body of water in Yellowstone National Park.

The mountains behind Lewis Lake are the Red Mountain Range, which is 1 of only 2 mountain ranges located entirely within the park.

                  • On the beach.....

12 miles into the hike our last look at Lewis Lake with the Teton Range faint in the background.

The 13 mile hike took 6 hours, which includes 1 30 minute break and 1 45 minute break. Started at 745am and finished at 145pm.
We hiked to the 2nd and 3rd largest lakes in the park and drove by the largest lake in the park.
It took just over 25 miles of hiking this season before seeing another person on the trail.

Who doesn't hike with a crossbow in their backpack?

bear spray on every backcountry hike

                        &

My girlfriend had a pair of backup barefoot running shoes. They are beat & give her shin splits. The only reason we were carrying a pair of backups is because we heard the main bridge over the Gallatin River had washed away, but there was a temporary bridge in its place.

                        • I left Big Sky, MT around 115pm on July 29th with the goal of hiking Bacon Rind Creek trail.

The BRC trail head is around 35 miles south of Big Sky.

Bacon Rind Creek is the only trail in Yellowstone National Park heading west off US 191.

Left at 200pm. A hundred yards from the trail head & the weather wasn't that great....

A .25 of a mile into the hike & the weather got much worse. Lightning, thunder, wind and hail. My girlfriend snapped a few pictures with her waterproof camera while we waited out the storm.

                          Waiting....

My girlfriends jacket ended up not being very waterproof.

                          • .5 of a mile into the hike & the weather improved.

My girlfriend took this picture with her waterproof camera.

1 mile into the hike in a sizable meadow.

Marker 2.1 miles into the hike. Leaving Yellowstone National Park & entering Lee Metcalf Wilderness, which is in Gallatin National Forest. Lee Metcalf was a congressman and then senator from Montana.

3.5 miles into the hike.... Storm clouds rolling in behind me.

The 4.75 mile hike took 2 hours. Started at 200pm and finished at 400pm. The trail started at an elevation of 7,150 feet and topped out at 7,375 feet near our turnaround point. A total elevation gain of only 225 feet.

The storm held off until the last .25 mile of the hike.

                              • After hiking Bacon Rind Creek on July 29th my girlfriend and I decided to hike Ousel Falls.

We drove 29 of 35 miles back towards Big Sky and then 2 miles west on Ousel Falls Road. Left around 530pm from the trailhead.

.25 of a mile into the "hike" crossing a really nice bridge.
