I just drove through a few weeks back on a trek to anchorage, I was bummed the waterfalls were closed.

I left Canyon Village, WY around 11am on June 21st with the goal of driving the Beartooth Highway to Red Lodge, MT. I wanted to leave by 8am but stayed up too late the night before researching my trip. The Beartooth Highway is only open mid May to mid October because of heavy snowfall & can even get closed down in the summer due to bad weather.

I headed north from Canyon Village, WY (elevation 7,918 feet). I was messing around with my camera setting the night before so the first few pictures look like shit. First couple are views heading up the mountain. The gap between the trees in the foreground of the first picture is the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

The first mountain pass I hit was Dunraven Pass (elevation 8,859). Second picture is the view looking back over the pass.

After Dunraven Pass I banged a right up a dirt road to the Mount Washburn (elevation 10,243) trailhead. Camera settings back to normal.....

Saw this ma ma black bear and 2 cubs near Tower Junction, WY (elevation 6,944). Really hard to see the 2 cubs in the picture, but I sat around and watched the 2 cubs play fight for 10 minutes or so before taking off.

I took a right turn heading east toward the northeast entrance of the park from Tower Junction. Bison.....

Before getting to the northeast entrance. Lamar Valley, which is also known as the "Serengeti of North America" because it is filled with wildlife. wolves, black bear, grizzly bear, bison, elk, pronghorn, moose, big horn sheep etc etc etc.

Saw Wolfman Rick's Xterra & stopped to talk with him for a minute. He gets paid to track the wolves around the greater Yellowstone ecosystem, which is an area of over 20,000,000 acres. Connecticut is around 3,500,000 acres.

I arrived in both Silver Gate, MT & Cooke City, MT (elevation 7,651 feet) within a mile or two after the northeast entrance. Cooke City isn't much of a city, less than 150 people live there. Silver Gate is less than 50.

This big guy was roaming the streets of Silver Gate by himself.

Within a mile or two after Cooke City I turned left onto dirt for the 2nd time today. Heading towards Daisy Pass (elevation 9,770)

After 1 or 2 miles I came to a four way intersection and turned left because that is where most of the tracks were leading. There were no signs.

A few hundred yards after making the left Daisy Pass denies me. There was still too much snow on the trail and I didn't want to risk getting stuck by myself. I'll be back.....

After leaving Daisy I turned left onto pavement again heading east. Only drove 1 or 2 miles before turning onto dirt for the 3rd time today. Heading towards Lulu Pass (elevation 9,846)

After only 2 miles. Lulu pass denies me.

After leaving Lulu I drove for 10 miles or so back on pavement. The road had dipped into Montana for 20 miles after the northeast entrance of Yellowstone. Back into Wyoming & into Shoshone National Forest for the first time. The spot is also on the 45th parallel, which is halfway between the equator and the north pole.

After leaving Montana I drove for 15 miles or so back on pavement into Wyoming. Turned onto dirt for the 4th time today just before the Beartooth Highway started. I hadn't planned on exploring this area, but it looked interesting especially if the road took me into the high country.

Grizzly bears are no joke around here. They aren't like black & brown bears that eat grass and fish. They like meat & people are meat.

More pics because it happened.

I ended up at Lily Lake, which was boring & had a bunch of tourists camping so I turned around and took another trail I found. The trail was the tightest and most similar to a green trail at Rausch, which meant slow going in my stock WJ without offroad tires.

I drove for around 3 miles after Lily Lake before turning around. I wasn't sure if the trail I took was for hiking or horses or snowmobiling after a while because it was so tight, unused, and unmarked. Turned around here..... took a picture in case I ever want to go back and keep going.

I started climbing up the Beartooth Highway in the Dub Ya Jay when after only a mile or two I had to stop. I glanced left from that road in the background.

The switchbacks then started and didn't stop for around 15 miles. Pilot and Index Peak overlook (elevation 8,718)

i dont mean this disparagingly, but do yourself a favor and get yourself a nice camera...you'll thank yourself one day looking back. it pays to have nice pictures of your travels, especially the kind youre doing. if anything it will do it better justice and maybe make the memory just that much better

Made a camera thread once that I was planning on bumping. Trying to get pictures of wildlife is pretty hard with my 5 year old 3X zoom Canon.

yeah.... I'm too lazy to do that. What camera would you suggest?
