  • On October 9th at 1100am we headed south from Big Sky, MT & at 100pm arrived at Artist Point near Canyon Village, WY after 100 miles of driving.

I lived in Canyon Village from May 28th - September 24th.

This bison was walking down the road between Madison Junction and West Yellowstone inside the park.

View of the lower falls (308 feet high) from Artist Point on the south rim.

A hundred yards into the trail this guy was easy to spot. He was making a lot of noise for some reason.

1/4 of a mile into the trail.

                    • Between - Sublime Point, Uncle Tom's & Brink of the Lower Falls

we hiked over 4 miles, over 1,100 vertical feet, 328 steps and 12 switch backs.

From 1200pm to 700pm we were inside Yellowstone National Park and from 100pm to 600pm we hiked some great trails near the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

Ate dinner at The Corral, which is 5 miles from Big Sky or 14 miles from where I currently live.

                      • On October 14th at 1115am we headed south from Big Sky, MT & at 1245pm arrived at Artists' Paint Pots after 80 miles of driving.

The Artists' Paint Pot trailhead is 4 miles south of the Norris intersection or 10 miles north of the Madison intersection.

Over half of the thermal features on the planet are in Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone National Park = 3,468 square miles
                        Earth = 57,506,000 square miles

We walked for 1/3 of a mile on a "path". The path is wide enough to drive an 18 wheeler down.

At the end of the path there is a 1/3 of a mile boardwalk / path loop around the thermal area.

A boiling / bubbling mud pot.

Two grey / blue milky pools.

Heading up some stairs on the Artists' Paint Pot thermal area loop.

Two boiling / bubbling mud pots.

The pot on the right can shoot mud up to 20 feet high. The thickness of mud in both pots is always varying.

                        • A grey / blue milky pool & mud pot combo.

I'm assuming this is a mud pot, but there was no way to see inside the crater without a 20 foot ladder.

                          A blue hot spring.

A hot spring and what looks like a small geyser bubbling, but it is not actually a geyser..... just boiling water.

A hot spring called "Flash Spring".

A hot spring and more bubbling / boiling water.

                          • A shot before walking the 1/3 of a mile path back to the Jeep.

The Artists' Paint Pot trail / "hike" is 1 mile total.
1/3 of a mile to the thermal area. 1/3 of a mile around the thermal area. 1/3 of a mile back to the Jeep.

We then drove 1 mile south from Artists' Paint Pots to the Monument Geyser Basin trailhead.

The trailhead is 5 miles south of the Norris intersection or 9 miles north of the Madison Intersection.

The trail parallels the Gibbon River for the first 1/2 mile before climbing 600 feet for the second 1/2 mile.

Hiking in the woods along the Gibbon.....

3/4 of a mile into the hike.

The Gibbon River winding through Gibbon Meadows.

1 mile into the hike & we arrived at Monument Geyser Basin. The basin is on a plateau. None of the geysers are active.

The first picture is "Monument Geyser", which is 8 feet high and 2 feet wide.
The second picture is of some dormant cone geysers.

1.5 miles into the hike. Almost to the Gibbon after descending 600 vertical feet from the geyser basin.
