You'll never be fast with that b hoop, Sry buddy. Looks good though. I was informed I'll be taking a romantic getaway to CT in a few weeks so I'll hafta come check this thing out!

There's still a whole truck to build. I've been designing some fabricated brackets for the fuel cell and the radiator, i need to get the new drivetrain in to get the front 4-link all setup and finish the front of the chassis to make this thing a roller within the next few weeks. No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

So i wanted to add some tech to this thing, instead of just pictures of the progress.
This is a breakdown of some of the math for the vertical travel for the rear end.
Basically, i have 14" travel shocks so the trick was going to be making the most of the travel, getting the shock mounting angle correct for optimizing shock performance, and using the link geometry in a way to limit the movement of the rear axle in terms of walking forward and backward.
My lower arms are 39" long. So, at ride height, when mounted along the centerline of the axle and one inch above the belly skid it sets the lower arms at about 1.5 degrees. Relatively flat, which was my goal.
I was shooting for 8" of uptravel and 6" down, which actually worked out perfect when i started making my calculations.
First, at full compression the centerline of the axle is in the same location as the centerline of the axle at full extension. Which means that the "flex steer" in the rear suspension geometry should be limited. Also, when bouncing around on those in-between trails at rausch, the rear end of the truck won't want to push in either direction as the suspension travels up and down.
Secondly, at full compression the angle of the shock in relation to the arm is set at 90 degrees, which optimizes the full efficiency of the shock by making the physical ratio 1:1.
By relating the shocks in this manner it should allow me to make the most of them. Which will be important in being able to tune them as best as possible with the ultimate goal of being able to be faster. My thinking is that the better the suspension works, the more speed I can carry through rougher stuff.
Now there are alot more things to consider with the rear suspension, but it's kinda hard to show it with a 2d drawing. This drawing shows how I can orientate the shocks from "front to back" in relation to the truck, but doesn't show the angle at which they need to be set from side to side. For that measurement I used the angle at which the triangulated lower arms come from the rear crossmember out to the axle mounts.
The uppers are designed to follow along a relatively similar plane that the lower arms produce. By getting those planes as close as possible, it will rotate the pinion downward as the axle travels up and rotate the pinion upward as the axle travels down. This will really limit any binding in the rear driveshaft during travel. I didn't follow the 70% "rule" of thumb thing, mostly because the math really didn't seem that correct. The longer upper arms though did mean that my squat numbers were off so I added more vertical seperation at the chassis end and that seemed to correct everything.
If you see something I said that doesn't seem correct let me know, I have been just kind of working at this little by little on my own. And tossing ideas back and forth with Clayton. It seems I am right path though, I guess we won't know for sure until I can drive the thing.Last edited by Zullock Holmes; 11-19-2012, 04:26 AM.No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

So i finally decided to do something tonight and installed the new 31 spline input to my atlas so it can be mated to the c6 transmission. Wasn't a very hard job, took my time so i didn't fuck up a still brand new case.
And in case anyone ever wondered what inside an atlas looks like:
It's really a very simple design. Simple and strong, guess that's why they work so well HAHA.
As for the car itself, i grabbed a big 'ol propane heater so i'm planning on haulin away on her this weekend while it done snows outside. Got a butt load of plate too, so i'm gonna fab the rear shock brackets and radiator mounts. Got a lot to do and there's a lot of new parts on the wayNo worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

i wanna get this thing completely roller and off the chassis stand before KOH, but how many times have i said that hahahahaNo worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.
