Time for an update.
So I'm tired of renix, have smashed the oil pan on the thing several times, and the 4.0 has ran without any oil in it for greater than a few minutes. It still runs good somehow but I think its finally time for a change.
Basically if I don't take care of this jeep a little better it will be in a junkyard pretty soon so this is my first step in doing so.
The plan is to get my 327 that use to be in the chevelle in there. It is a very healthy engine (at minimum a 350 horse engine) and I already own it which makes it a perfect candidate. I am looking into switching to the dark side and going to an automatic transmission for cost, ease, and the ability to find a transmission. I currently own a few trannys, 4l60e, turbo 350, turbo 400. I really need an overdrive cause of my 5.38 gears so 350 and 400 are out. The 4l60e is going to be too much of a pain in the ass to make work with all the electronics so I'll probably be lookin for a 700r4.
Then I need a tranfer case, i own a dana 300 and would like to make that work.
Novak has this adapter

which is mad cake... The only thing I can't find or figure out is if this adapter will allow me to run the d300 flipped. Tomorrow I'll have to call unless someone else can answer that.
Other obstacles I need to conquer are cooling, oil pan clearance, and exhaust. I should be able to place the engine wherever I need and the idea is to measure where the 4.0 pan sits now and have the 327 pan sit about an inch higher so my axle doesn't collide with it anymore. Cooling could be tough but I have a radiator in mind that I think should handle it and twin electric fans with a big ass alternator should do the trick. The exhaust might be tight, need some stock manifolds of an 80s truck i guess. Then I have to deal with running the pipe and the driveshaft bein on one side and my upper control arm and starter on the other.
So thats where I'm at. The way I see it this gives me a chance to get under the hood and clean some shit up and beef up the inner frame some. Hopefully when all is done I will have more ambition to get some tubing in this bitch to help preserve it more.
Feel free to flame on about the y do you need a v8 thing blah blah, don't care cause v8s are badass and nothing can replicate the sound and power

That is a pretty cool idea. The kid I sold my old 700r4 is going to be yanking it out soon to put a sm465 in his truck. I don't know how much life is left in the trans but it had a kickass TCI valvebody in it; reverse manual shift, with full engine braking capability. Basically the best of both worlds. If you are interested I can hook you up with him. I really liked the 700r4, it was just too long for my jeep so I put a 4 speed in it. And I am sure you know that 700R4s out of s10s had a factory adapter to a np231 case (27 spline input) if you didn't want to run the 300...
Altho the Dana 300 you will like a lot better. I am sure you have seen the $20 do it yourself flip on Pirate... if not then search for it... pretty cool.
What are you thinking for fueling on that 327? Carb or fuel injection? I am excited to see what you do... Your truck is sweet. I am not going to make any friends here but I support any swap that involves replacing a 4.0 with a Chevy V6 or V8 mill.1950 Willys Trail Rig

Myself and a buddy had 350's in toyotas and tyruing to get them to cool was hard, 3 core rad, mechanical and twin black majic fans, no t-stat and she was always pushin 200-210 light offroading, and pushing it had in the mud would satrt to reach 230-240 sometimes. However, the wrangler with the small block runs 180 . we ran block huggers on the yota's with some shortened collectors, and tight custom 90's off that, then back.88 manche-96 4.0 OBDII 5in 35's-new bumper..parked

Owen find out more about that 700r4, I don't have anything lined up yet. I had a 700r4 with manual valve body and chit in the chevell at one point. Wish I still had that tranny now... If the price is reasonable I may be interested.
I kno about the 231 deal but it's a weak case and no front dig capabilities, and I need that.
The 300 flip will be homemade
