6.25 miles into the hike on the summit of Observation Peak (elevation 9,397 feet). We were the first of the day to summit.
Looking south toward Grebe Lake, Wolf Lake and Ice Lake & looking west toward the Gallatin Range.
Summit marker built into the rock. This is the second marker I've seen. The first was on Mount Washburn.

8.25 miles into the hike well on our way back.
10.25 miles into the hike having passed Cascade Lake around a mile ago. We keep on heading straight.
11.25 miles into the hike at the Cascade Lake trailhead on Tower-Canyon road.
The 11.5 mile hike took 6 hours. Started at 715am and "finished" at 115pm. The trail varied in elevation from 7,875 feet to 9,375 feet. A net elevation gain of 1,500 feet.
The first 6.25 miles took 3 1/2 hrs to summit.
We spent 30 minutes on the summit.
The last 5.25 miles took only 2 hrs.
We attempted to call my Mom starting at the 10.25 mile mark, but had no cell service. After walking for a .25 of a mile on the road....
We ended up getting a ride from a park ranger. The same park ranger we met at the top of Observation Peak.
The second hike in a row hitching a ride with a park ranger.
The weather was near perfect all day. The hike started off cold and in the low 30s, but it warmed to the mid 60s by the time we finished.
I had hiked the 2.5 mile section of trail between Cascade Lake and Tower-Canyon road before. On the Ice Lake th to Cascade Lake th hike July 13 2012....
