  • September 2nd in Yellowstone National Park.

My Dad and I were planning to hike halfway to Wolf Lake to see Little Gibbon Falls, but the trailhead was roped off. Due to "bear management"
My Dad and I then hiked from Glacial Boulder trailhead to .5 of a mile past Silver Cord Cascade.

The Wolf Lake trailhead is 8 miles west of Canyon Village.
The Glacial Boulder trailhead is 1.5 miles south of Canyon Village.

    Started hiking at 830am.

Glacial Boulder weighs 1,000,000 pounds and is 18 feet by 24 feet.
15,000 years ago a glacier carried the boulder 40 miles from its point of origin to the north.

    • .5 of a mile into the hike. Some views of the canyon.
Wildfire smoke was settling in the canyon all morning.

1.5 miles into the hike at the turn around point.
Apparently we passed the overgrown Silver Cord Cascade overlook.

      • 2.25 miles into the hike at the really overgrown view of the cascade.

Still around 2.25 miles into the hike at a slightly better view of the cascade.
Silver Cord Cascade plunges 1,200 feet down the south rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and into the Yellowstone River.

The 3.25 mile hike took just 95 minutes. Started at 830am and finished at 1005am.
The trail varied in elevation from 7,825 feet to 8,050 feet. A net elevation gain of only 225 feet.

I had hiked this section of trail on the Washburn Spur hike July 25 2012....

BUT it was pitch black the last 1.5 miles a year ago, which is the section my Dad and I hiked.

          • My girlfriend and I were planning to hike Lost Lake trail, which is near Tower Junction.
At Norris Junction the National Park Service posted a sign saying Dunraven Pass is closed.
The pass was closed because of a snowstorm the previous day.

Instead of taking a long detour we decided to check out Norris Geyser Basin.
Neither of us had ever been there before.

Norris Geyser Basin (elevation 7,595 feet) is located at Norris Junction, which is 12 miles west of Canyon Village, WY.
Norris Geyser Basin is the oldest, hottest and most impressive of Yellowstone National Park's thermal areas.
We explored the Norris Geyser Basin on September 19th from 430pm to 630pm.

Norris Geyser Basin is split into 2 main basins. Back Basin & Porcelain Basin.

Minute Geyser & people are assholes....
I'm not sure where Minute Geyser is so I just snapped some pictures near the sign.

Monarch Geyser, which used to be very active, but thermal features constantly change.
A lot of times the change is due to seismic activity.
