i always find it interesting when a girl claims a guy is 'too' nice. i don't know what they are thinking, but i think it's absolutely fantastic when a guy wants to take care of you, be there for you, and make sure you are comfortable. if i spent my time around a guy who could careless about my well-being and focused more on the other girls around us, it would just make me feel like shit....unfortunately what is happening is too many girls are spending time with these douchebags & they start thinking they don't 'deserve' a nice guy, or anyone who is willing to take care of them...it's a shamemrs. heavymetal from jeepforum

The only time I open the car door for my girl is when it is locked (no keyless entry) or unlocked and covered in mud. However the door to a business/house I try to make a point to hold open for everyone. I have to admit I've missed it a few times but I guess it happens..
Another thing I can say I do is let someone go first when arriving at an intersection together. Not only because I know they're like the average American and in a rush and might go anyway, even if I do, but because it's the nice thing to do. However I can say that I've been the guy who has jumped the line at a stop sign too just because my day is going a certain way. It's a shame I admit but its the world we live in today.-Matt

Okay, so from a girl with anti-nice guy syndrome... yes, i said syndrome, cause I fully admit that it doesn't totally make sense when girls are into d-bags... but we'll get back to that.
There's a few fine lines I see between a guy being a total dick, having an overbearing need to care for/ impress a girl/ keep her around, and the happy medium between the two; chivalry.
Taking some of the concrete examples:
Holding the door for anyone, especially a girl (girlfriend, friend, total stranger): Yup, definitely expected.
Opening the car door for a girl: Personally, I think this is WAY over the top. Sorry, I can open my own car door. I don't need to sit there and wait for you to come all the way around the car to let me out.
Giving a girl a seat: I think it's nice to offer, but I would never ever expect someone to give up their chair to me nor would I usually take it but it's a nice gesture.
I could give some more but I think you get the picture. I've been lucky enough to have a lot of really great guy friends who have given me hope that chivalry isn't dead, but I agree that a lot of guys truly have no clue what it is.
Back to the "nice guy" v. "asshole" concept: No, not all girls who have a problem with nice guys want to be treated like shit. I will admit that a guy who is totally all about you right off the bat and/or has this excessive willingness to go out of his way for you before you're actually anything more than friends etc etc can be intimidating/nerve racking/a huge red flag to a girl who's not sure about jumping into something. Could be a fear of commitment, could be that it seems he's willing sacrifice above and beyond what she is, or could just be that she's not all that interested and needs an excuse. It may not make much sense, but it happens. Sorry?

I make a point to open doors for all Women even down to moderately attractive women... sorry I am a guy I have to draw the line somewhere. I find if you go out of your way to hold doors women really appreciate it. As for the car door thing.....first couple dates....if I'm sober....maybe. Girls don't expect you too and when you do you have to like shove them aside to be able to do it. Plus then you have to worry about slamming a car door on someone you are planning on having sex with..... I don't think chivalry is dead, I just think people watch too much Jersey Shore and other de-sensitizing TV. It's all reality TV's faultJeeps don't get stuck ... they just take a nap when they are tired of being awesome
