I want Essay long responses on why Alex should get the I6.
Phil, has it been so long you have forgotten my name ?

My memory could very well be screwed as to how competent the 4.0 was in the speed department in comparison to the 4.7. The reason I voted the 4.0 was because I have recently become a man of practicality in the automotive department. I have been going through the same search as Alex on what would make an excellent vehicle for myself.
I made my vote based on an experience in the two Jeeps in approximately the year 2003. I also clicked the button without going through my memory bank fully and remembering how entertaining it was trying to get the tires to break loose on the overland.

my dad had a 99 WJ with the 4.7L. He sold it with 250k miles on it and never touched the engine or tranny. He towed a dump trailer that was well over the towing capacity of the jeep many times.

Look for the 4.7L high output. They have 265 hp verses 235 hp of the regular 4.7L. My dad got about the same gas mileage as my XJ around town, but his got a lot better on the highway. He got 24 mpg on a few highway trips.

Also, look for a laredo with the V8. The limiteds are known to have expensive climate control issues.

If you go straight six, get one '02-'04. The '99-'01 4.0Ls had a defective 0331 head casting that cracks a bit easier.

finding a laredo with a V8 is harder then finding a limited with a V8 and also finding a V8 with the selec-trac (not full time) t case is also hard. most V8s and limiteds had quadra-drive

97 TJ that I think is pretty neat.

For being a Grand (), the WJ isn't a bad vehicle. I'd like to build up my XJ and get a WJ for a daily. When my previous XJ got hit and totaled I almost bought the WJ from my dad, but it was getting tired and had a hard life. Like others said, the 4.0L is a good engine, just kinda slow with the 3.55 gears. ZJ 4.0's had 3.73 gears and were a little lighter so they had a bit more "driveability". The 4.7L is another one of those motors that will run forever if taken care of. Its pretty quick considering how heavy WJs are, especially the 4.7L H.O., and if you drive it easy you can get good mpg.

The 4.7L's also sound WICKED with a flowmaster. My friend just bought an '04, and it sounds just like his '01 mustang with the same muff.

Basically same sound as my friend's WJ:

petes sounds so sick with the exhaust he has on it. its subtle, but when you open it up and the exhaust note mixes with the intake note...
