  • WJ. a tale of 2 engines

if you had the option of getting a WJ would you choose the v8 or the 4.0?

i know more about the 4.0, they go forever, easy to maintain and get slightly better gas mileage than the v8.

on the other hand, well it's a v8. i could tow the cherokee if i ever wanted to. though it probably won't happen.

i'm undecided at this point, make my decisions.

also don't just pick v8 because you can. i'm looking for your actual opinion if you were to buy one. thanks

its a wj. it only comes down to gas mileage since it was made for pavement...

How is this even a question??
Get a 2001 or newer and you will get beautiful gas mileage with the 4.7!
On a road trip I average between 22 and 23 mpgs at 70-75 mph.

And on the other side of it you will get a slap next time I see you if you buy one with a 4.0 in it.

see thats the kind of answer i'm looking for corey. how are the 4.7's reliability? i know for a fact the 4.0 can go 200-300k miles. but will the 4.7 make it to 170k and blow up?

Mine has over 150 and still strong, doug is def right when he says they have power. Its kinda silly that an SUV has that kinda power!
Reason I say 2001 is because the fan is powered by the power steering pump instead of electricity from the alternator which results in a decent fuel mileage increase. Plus by 2001 they had finally gotten all the bugs worked out.

                i have a wettie for the 4.0s. (who doesn't?)
my xj is getting real close to 200,000 miles and still runs like a beast.
..and i tend to slack on maintenance.
                erika. sweat and dirt;

                00 xj & 93 yj.

to put the 4.0 into perspective - my 93 had 270k on it. my 99 has 218k

If i were to buy a WJ, it would have a v8 if at all possible.

The 4.7 isnt known for unreliability, so why not

The gas milage is about the same for both,i actually get less gas milage than my friends with the 4.7.Both are reliable, the only times i've had to replace a 4.7 is when the people dont change the oil in them. The only drawback to the 4.7 is if you ever have to replace it there expensive.

4.7 all the way... WJ's with the 4.0 are a bit slugish as compared to the xj with 4.0s.
