  • I want hydro assist

except, im not sure if i want hydro assist.

im tired of wasting steering boxes and stressin out my unibody, and i feel like a hydro assist setup will be beneficial to that. NOT even entertaining the idea of full hydro.

unsure if the effort involved will be worth it though over just replacing my steering box

reason for me asking being my steering box has a lot of play in it right now, and seems to "skip" a tooth or whatever inside when i turn the wheel past 1 point..this is a first for me...noticed it when i was wheelin flexed out today and at a stop...phil and i got out to look at it was clearly skippin inside at a certain point when i turned the wheel, gives a loud click. definitely was not like that yesterday and i didnt do anythin intense today at all

now that i'm back on 35's im content with keeping normal steering boxes. might do a psc unit down the line

i also made my frame bombproof so stressing that is no issue

also i ditched every rubber bushing in my front end, so there will be no more stretching of that

I think the next course of action should be to reinforce the uniframe, and try out the YJ box. Maybe even the WJ power steering like Adam said.

Going straight to hydro assist seems like a big jump to push 35's around, but then again I really don't know much about it.

Thanks, Sam...but I think your build thread is elsewhere.

durango boxes are iffy to me...i bought one once, but it seems like its a crapshoot as to whether you need to tear the box down to remove a "spacer" inside that prevents it from going lock to lock when on an XJ...AFAIK theres no way to tell until you try it. i eventually sold it before i installed because i got the one i have now for free brand new ...that worked out well.

I run ram assist, I have Greg from Banditt Offroad's old setup on my jeep. Worth every penny and then some. I can steer my setup (D60 welded diff 39s @4psi) with one hand easily. I would definately recommend it if a) you are wearing out steering boxes and b) your frame/uniframe is bending/creaking/flexing. a) The Ram is helping taking some of the burden off the steering box (ports in the box only direct hydraulic flow) b) The ram is mounted to the axle, so the is the reactant force required to turn the tires isn't being applied to the frame/uniframe.

                              Considerations
-Pump/reservior: The ram requires additional fluid reserve to fully extend. You might need to add a larger reservior. The pump also has to work a little harder. Not sure if you will need an upgraded pump on a 4.0 Jeep. I am running a stock GM on mine with no problems, not even a whine.
-Cooling: Not a bad idea for any abused steering system, I run an ATF cooler on the return line for my steering.
-Clearance: The only Hydro Assist catastrophe I have ever seen is when a ram hit someones frame because they didn't have a bumpstop. I know you are smarter than that.
-Spare parts: Not a bad idea to carry a spare hose, and some plugs if the ram seal ever blew.
