  • Problem with Warm Hubs ( lots of pics )

Ill try and explain this the best I can...

Passenger side has no issues, can freely and easily turn the selector by hand with no issues.

This weekend I was pulling a stuck car out of a ditch, I was on pavement spinning all 4 tires, very low speed , roads were icy.. Heard a loud pop come from the front axle. Ended up losing 4wd to my drivers side... But the axle shaft was still spinning and the ujoint was intact, so I figured it was something out of the hub. I wasnt able to turn the selector to neither free or lock, it was stuck between.

Took the hub apart today, it was full of dirt, cleaned everything up... Pretty sure the issue has something to do with the pressure springs, and the mechanism inside the hub that rides in the groves ( see pics ) ...

I pushed the clutch into the "locked" position, and moved the jeep around and indeed it does lock the hub. But now the clutch is kinda stuck in the hub, and its stuck on lock. How would I get it to pop back out, pull the hub?

Anyway, here are pics... I kinda am new to this whole hub deal so im learning so bear with me if im not making sense or calling things by the right name..

And.. if anyone has or knows where I can find an exploded view of a warn d44 hub let me know, I searched the google and couldnt find any.

In this pic you can sorta see where the piece that spins in not going down into the lower grove, it dug its way into the center of the grove, and its making it hard for me to put it in free..

Is the spring suppose to look this fucked up?

How to get the clutch out of the hub? Or just pull the whole hub out?

    Look right?

ok if there is ANY dirt in there brakleen the shit out of it and replace the blown seal and you may need to do wheel bearings.

second. a new pair of hubs is like 80 bucks

third i cant tell whats wrong with those pics, but its possble the shaft broke in the spindle and can still put power to that wheel

sam, if the shaft broke in the spindle, how would it send any power to the wheel? I was crawling around last night in 4 low and everything seems fine now... I cleaned the fuck outta everything.

Dont think i blew a seal, the reason dirt got in I think is because i am missing one allen screw, and that hole was packed with dirt.

I need a book or service manual to refer to so I dont fuck this up if im taking the whole thing apart.

its a special 4 pronged hub socket

you can get em' at any auto parts store

get the one for chevy dana44's

i wheeled on that shaft for half a day because there was no room in the spindle for the shaft to go so it just grabbed other pieces of broken shaft to turn the tire. sometimes it would make hella noise and not turn, other times it would make no noise and turn fine.

I would say your hub is having some engagment problems. On the locking hub there is no clutch, just mainly a sliding mechanism that couples 2 sets of splines when the hub is in the lock position. I took your photo and drew a red line this part. On my milemarker hub, this piece is held disengaged by a spring and I think warn is similar. When you turn the dial to the lock position, it pushes the coupler into place, when you return to "free" the spring pushes it back out. If your spring looks like that you are not going to get the right engagent. Furthermore, the coupler does slide in and out and if there is dirt in there it might jam it up.

To remove the hub, you do not need a spindle nut wrench, just snap ring pliers and a small flat screwdriver or seal pick. There are lock rings holding the hub in place in two spots, the wheel hub and axle shaft. I put green arrows pointing to them. Once they are removed, thread in two of the six cap bolts and use the to pull it out of the wheel hub.

If you find your shaft is broken, then you will need the spindle nut wrench to take it all apart. It is not a bad tool to have anyway, if you have a dana 44 and go wheeling.

If all else fails take the other one apart and compare.

That happened to me, eventually blew the dial off of the locking hub and spit everything out
