  • WJ rear axle options, what do you guys think...

well...my WJ is basically set for where it is now, im at 3" and ill be putting the D30 aussie in next sunday, also i have rear lower teraflex arms to put in and an IRO a-arm spacer, should be good with the rear to about ~6" of lift...

so since im where i want to be with the current setup 3" and 31's, once i start saving again, i want to work my way to 33's and swap the rear axle out..

im stuck between 2 axles, either the dana 44a that comes in the V8 WJ's which is a 30 spline, bolt in swap, and the ring/pinion i believe is decent size...however the housing is aluminum, theres no lockers for it except trying to find a used Aussie since they discontinued it, and the only thing id have to do is shorten the rear driveshaft about an inch or so..i can probably get someone local to build a diff skid for the alum housing that hug the pumpkin as best as possible and this company bluetorch fab has a nice cover out for it..Also its a pretty decent chunk of change for one of these at a junkyard from what ive seen so far.

the other option is the 8.8....WJ WMS is ~63", 63 or 63.5 i forget which the 8.8 is alot less...need to get the 5x5 bolt pattern, brackets, somehow get the a arm to work or just switch to a different rear suspension setup, and the WJ has a weird speedo thing..im not entirely sure how it works but i need to do more research something with the tone rings on the axle shafts or something, and you need a way to get the rear to work with the front, but mallcrawlin.com has come up with a couple solutions...

sorry for the novel, what do you guys think? should i just sell my piece and save for a rubicon lol...

anybody can go out and buy a rubicon. you dont see alot of WJ's. u can do the 88 and get the width back and change the bolt pattern with spacers.

yea i'd really like the idea of having a built WJ because not many people do...an 8.8 would be dope cause there so much support for it, but its just a lot of money probably to get it in there and i can't weld and im just looking into axle swaps now so id have to get someone to basically do it for me...

some guys wheel there d35's geared/locked and on 33's with their WJ's which with the way i wheel could probably be done, but id rather not have it in the back of my mind to worry about when im 300 miles from home at Rausch lol...

you guys dont think the 44a is a good idea?

also another question, how is it daily driving with aussies front and rear lol..

44a is just as much of a headach as the 8.8 but the 8.8 imho is a better axle but if you get a reg d 44 and re weld all the perches and get new shafts with either bolt pattern that would be a sick setup too but youd still have to do ford crown vic rear discs or tera flex discs to have discs on an xj d 44. any option is costly, i d say do an 8.8 for least cost. But loose the flange for the drive shaft, and get a yoke for it. flanges break alot.

I wouldn't bother spending the money to swap a 44a in. Like said above the only good thing about it is that it is pretty much bolt in. Other than that it is just as much of a pain as an 8.8 swap to get a much less desired axle. Plus you can find an 88 with discs in the rear.

jk 44 or jk 60 rear

              pre-geared

              pre-locked

              same bolt pattern

              maybe same/similar brackets?

true you guys are probably right, cant you also find an 8.8 with 4:10's in it already? id probably go with 4:56 anyhow to get it over with

The JK rubi axles jumped up in price and the JK axles are 5 on 5 bolt pattern.

At this point I would go with the 8.8 or go right to 1-tons.

I already told ya Jay, 8.8. Dan can weld up the brackets no problem. hell, you can reuse your stock D35 ones if you need to save cash. its not the best way but theyll work well with some reinforcement. i know you want 4.56s, but if you find one with 4.10s theres no reason to keep the 4.10s and get a HP30 with 4.10s.

Wouldnt an 8.8 be to skinny for a WJ? They are skinnier than XJ axles and WJ axles are way wider than ours. Wouldnt that be a problem?

He needs to get adapter spacers to change the bolt pattern any way unless he has big bucks for new shafts.
