Take it from me. I wish I built something more streetable. I would build a nice streetable wheeler and have a tow rig so I could drive both to work/school. If one breaks down you can drive the other. If you are going somewhere far, tow the wheeler. But it sucks to trailer it a half hour that you could just drive it.1950 Willys Trail Rig

this jeep/buggy's main purpose will be RCrocs and the race series......
that's kinda why i want to keep the xj, cause it's pretty capable now and allows me to continue to do little weekend/1 day local wheeling tripsNo worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

The way it should be decided on is how much money you have to spend. Do you have the money for a tow rig that will not be a piece of shit? I see it as being cheaper for you to regear it at this moment in time. Then with some sacrifice and wise spending you will be able to afford a decent tow rig. Always add a few weeks and a thousand bucks onto a buggy build.1996 xj, waggy 44 front 5.13 gears aussie trussed, 3 links, 3.5" coils, spooled 8.8 rear, 38" tsl sx's, tnt front bumper, jesus freaks rear bumper, Olympic top hat roof rack, bunch of dumb shit

buggies are not for those with small wallets...
to compete officially, it costs a Lot, all things considered. truck. trailer. safety equip meeting regs, the buggy itself, so onmrs. heavymetal from jeepforum

the money issue is why its going to be a slower build. i have the money to start the suspension and drivetrain, hopefully when i'm done with that i have the money for all the steel for the cage and such, and progressing like that. i plan on it taking me about a year to finish, which means like you said add 2 months and a couple thousand bucks more than i'm expected
what i don't have is money for a tow rig.... but thats now.
so i really think i'm just gonna go with op 3, gear the xj, and start building the buggy. I'll figure out the tow rig thing when i get there. thanks for all the adviceNo worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

Heres the real question, do you have the financial means to do this, or is this all hopes an dreams.
Not being rude, but you are 20, and I remember you posting that you lost your job/quit your job/ were thinking about quitting your job/ or something about working at hooters.
As a 20 year old, do you make enough cooking or whatever you do to buy/build a buggy that will easily cost you 10k? And then a trailer and a tow rig, another 10k?
I may not know your whole life story, so forgive me if you are some sort of young millionaire, but most 20 year olds probably cant fit something like this on their budgets, ontop of going to school.

Well it is not a full on buggy, from the talks with him it seems as he is building a tubed out cj.1996 xj, waggy 44 front 5.13 gears aussie trussed, 3 links, 3.5" coils, spooled 8.8 rear, 38" tsl sx's, tnt front bumper, jesus freaks rear bumper, Olympic top hat roof rack, bunch of dumb shit

So then one should just take the word 'Buggy' and replace it in every one of Matt's posts with 'CJ' and we will all be happy and this would all make sense.sigpic

yes lets figure this out
buggies are typically fully tube, or VERY little original vehicle remaining...aka just a length of frame..or firewall forward to some degree existing...something of that nature...- Will
