I have been impressed with what Ruffstuff has been offering on their brand new 9" housings on pirate. Not only quality, but customer service as well.

They seem like they will work with you on basically any application you can think of to get what you need.

They also manufacture the center section by making 36 different bends to make it as close to round as possible for clearance, and as strong as possible. They also are making a yota 8" housing the exact same way, only smaller.

If you haven't found the threads already...

Whatever housing you run, I would most definetly invest in a truhi9 third.

      From the mfg's website:

PRICES for assembled 3rd members w/gears and traction aid

      Full Spool 28 or 31 spline: $ 1749.00

      Full Spool 35 spline (30 degree): $ 1799.00

Trac Loc posi: (no thrustblock) $ 1899.00
      (new 4 spider)

      Auburn posi: $ 2079.00

      Detroit Locker: $ 2169.00
      (31 or 35 spline)

      Detroit Tru Trac: $ 2099.00
      (28 or 31 spline)

      ARB 31 spline: $ 2469.00

      ARB 35 spline: $ 2499.00
if you can afford to build a 9" using a custom housing and beef outers, that is a small price to pay for the highest pinion on any axle offered.

that and the 9" uses the lowest pinion evar.

a low pinion dana60 is the highest low pinion axle out there, and i still spin the yoke on rocks and end up poppin out caps. my housing is also rotated a great amount.

truhi9 is probably a def on this build. Im trying to decide on housing, gears, shafts etc etc.

When running at speed like desert racing, wouldnt you want a selectable locker for fast sections? so you could disengage it
You better decide if you are hanging on the cross, or banging in the nails

i dont see why it would be needed for speed

i know many jeepspeed rigs run full spools

          less things to break

I went ahead and just changed this to overall driveline discussion.

Powerplant is probably going to be something in the area of a LS1. Im still researching engines though.

Unsure of transmission and t case. Been looking at atlas and staks but not real fimilar on gearing and such for speed

a bunch of the KOH guys run spools in the rear, carter's rig included.

if you can afford the selectable lockers do it but in my opinion id rather run spools so i dont have to worry as im hitting some tough section of the course "I hope i didnt take out an air line and they actually locked".... im pretty sure most of the housings nowadays are all as beefy as one another just look for the material thickness you prlly will be all set with 35 spline shafts, worst comes to worst you could do a full float kit and run i think theyre 41 spline.

As for motors either a gm 6.0 or the 5.3 theyre pretty good motors, relativly light not too heavy.... also could find an aluminum 5.7 or something of the sort but i think properly built a 5.3 would be fine.

For the transmission how heavy duty do you want? do you want auto or standard?

For the t case just buy an atlas 4 speed and be done with it that way youll have 1:1, 2.72:1 4:1 or 10.38:1 youll have all the gearing youll ever need and you'll never break it.

Light is always better, trans will be auto.

tcase I notice a lot of the guys running speed are running 2 speed cases. I know Carter just ditched his 3 speed for a 2 speed cuz he never used the low gear

yeah but if you ever decided for shits and giggles to do a crawlin comp ya may want the lower gears but if you go to 4.1 in a 2 speed case youd prlly be ok, i just like the idea of having more than i need that way the 1 time i NEED it i have it. and as far as auto trans go i dont have much knowledge as to which ones will hold up to a v8 and big tires never needed to lol cuz when i do a buggy its gonna be a turbo 4 banger

Im really going for best design, so if it makes sense to have a lower gear I will entertain the idea, but if it doesnt. its not being done. This is being built to go extrememly fast in desert, but still be able to climb some rocks if the course requires(KOH) Im trying to get the best medium, but lean more towards the speed. If it crawls rocks "ok" but can hit 110 115 in the flats no problem im good with that. Does that make sense what im conveying? I really have no intention of doing a "crawling" comp

Thats wehre your shifting out of low range anyways though haveing more gear selections is better than having to make do with one that really isn't what you need

                              i have seen 40 and 46 spline 9's

you also dont need it to be a full floater, but thats a plus

in all honesty a 35 spline alloy shaft is hard for anyone to break. but ya never know

i thought the place i was looking at was 41 or 42 ehh who knows and yeah i like the idea of full floating axles... and built bigger than needed is always better
