    I would run this setup

5.3 chevy (certain models had aluminum blocks)
If you look up the LS thread on pirate theres a couple links to some guys who do custom harness and ECU tuning to boost the power on these motors. People are getting 350hp out of a stock 5.3 with a tune.

    Ruffstuff 9"
Ballistic aluminum 14bolt hub and spindle kit (FF)
    35 spline 300m shafts
    Full spooled MEGA Hi9

Wiki data on the Aluminum 5.3

    LM4
The LM4 was an aluminum block version of the LM7, and had a short production life. It should not be confused with the L33.

    LM4 applications:

    2003-04 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT
    2004 GMC Envoy XL
    2004 Chevrolet SSR

    L33
The L33 was an aluminum block version of the LM7, and was referred to as the Vortec 5300 HO in marketing materials. Power increased by 15 hp (11 kW), to 310 hp (230 kW), over the LM7, and torque was unchanged. It was only available on extended cab 4WD pickup trucks. Only 25% of trucks made in 2005 had the L33 engine.

    L33 applications:

    2005-2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD
    2005-2007 GMC Sierra 1500 4WD

      Heres another option.

fabricated 14bolt housing with aluminum drop out third. Pair that with the second link for a "light" weight 14 bolt

Why not? It will weight slightly more then a 9" and will have a stronger ring gear setup.

                the way i see it....

a 14 bolt is a down and dirty CHEEP strength from the start.
AKA no modifying, blah blah blah
that is the main reason why alot of people do it

now why go to a super duper 3rd member 14 bolt that will cost bookoo bucks,
when the only gain you have over the 9 inch is bigger ring and pinion.
not to mention the crazy amount of aftermarket for the 9 inch.
its kinda in my eyes like polishing poop...

Sam you god damn PSC newb!

then it would of been spyder 9s and not sIpder 9s

plus poison spyder is still in business, they were just bought by a different person, and now the original poison spyder only makes there spyder locks

I tend to stay away from things I dont know and I was looking at the Ballistic fabs 9" a lot, but it was confusing me so I gave up on trying to understand it.

I would take a serious look at Ruffstuff specialties. Dan is the king of customer service and he makes a kick ass product. His 9" was built after the custom TT rear ends with the rounded housings.

There are more guys then you would think who break 9" gears. Since a 14 bolt is pretty much a larger 9" it only makes sense that people would want to step up to it. Specially if the market for light weight housings comes out (more then just ballistics). That 14 bolt will be around the same price if not less as gears and lockers are generally cheaper then 9" stuff, and it will be stronger. and you could use your stock outers on one if you didnt want to spring for the bling aluminum hubs. In the end it is a cheaper stronger alternative to a 9".
