  • enine boom ?

As some of you know i had some issues on the way home from rausch. I was going downhill and the cruise control was holding back my speed and i hear several loud bangs followed by a cloud of smoke. i let it coast to the side of the road where it shut off on its own. I was not able to restart it although it cranks strong with no bad noises. Anyone have any ideas on what went wrong? blown ring? bad valves?

When my YJ was a 4 cylinder, pretty much the same thing happend. A valve just randomly broke off in the cylinder while driving. Let us know how you make out.

best to check the entire surface of the engine to make sure you didn't throw a rod. i would say it's safe to say that some part (the whole thing till you tear it down) is garbage and you should work on getting a replacement in there

i vote dropped a valve or threw a rod

ok i started off checking for spark and fuel and i have no spark. i pulled the dizzy and everything looks good. Next i drained the oil and found no metal particles. I am stumped because i dont know of any mechanical failures that would kill spark. Many people are assuring me that its the crank sensor but how does that explain the loud bangs and smoke?

the easy way to check for a bad crank sensor hook up a good scan tool go into data steam crank it and see if you get rpms on the scanner

yea im gonna do a few tests for it tomorrow but how would that cause smoke and loud noises?

I guess it would sort of make sense for it to be a bad sensor. Sensor fails causing lack of spark which leads to misfiring (loud noises) and the smoke is from all the unburned fuel.

Today i checked compression on all cylinders and all were about even, over 120. They all held for 5 minutes with no drop. I tried disconnecting the CPS with no luck. It still sounds as if it has a stronger than usual crank though.
