Well in #1 you have a valve or piston ring probmel most likely or there is a head gasket issue.

Have you pulled the valve cover off yet? I hear those heads love to crack there and half the time can be seen with just the eye.

If you are going to spend money on wad work have a shop rebuild your head, they will take the time to do it right and focus on it more than XXX place that cranks them out as fast as they can.
99k on that motor is nothing and those springs can be used again no problem, valves too.

Just put an LS in it. Easier that way.

I used three different compression testers and they all read something different. The innova one from Amazon said my first cylinder was at like 175 PSI. I think i need to re-do that cylinder.

I ended up grabbing a MAC compression tester from a friend and using that one. I figured that was the most accurate out of the three i have.

No haven't pulled the VC yet. Will do that tonight after work. I don't see a crack through the oil fill cap though. Normally it's between the 3rd and 4th.

Figure i'll just go grab Bigbikes engine and morph them into one.

You get that LS cranked out and then i can come over there and copy it.

Why are you convinced the head is bad? Did you fix the rest of your cooling shit first?

Don't leap in and replace the head off the bat.

You need to use a leak down tester. Compression wont tell you what you need to know.

Replacing all the other cooling stuff most likely Friday or Saturday.

I'm just trying to test for a cracked head so I can figure out whether or not I need one.

Just bought a leak down tester off amazon. It'll be here tomorrow.

just a heads up about your question between coil pack and distributor motors. If you end up swapping a older distributor motor into that 01, you will have to strip the older motor down to long block and swap over all accessories and brackets from the 01 motor. you will then simply remove the distributor and wires and put in the coil pick up where the distributor was and set it up and then the coil pack obviously over the spark plugs.

I did this swap in my 01 xj since the 01 motor threw a rod right through the oil pan and block. the engine i used came from a 95 grand cherokee.

aren't the exhaust ports very different, one uses a header and the newer one uses a 2 piece cast manifold set up with pre-cats?

yes they are different, i forgot to mention that part, i modified my ports a bit and the gasket also. There custom adapter plates out there also if you dont want to modify anything. other option with i comtemplated doing would be to cut of the flange of the pre cat header and weld on a flange from a pre 99 header (easy to get , since they crack oftern)
