Passing inspection

I am looking into purchasing an already lifted wrangler from out of state.

It is an 02 it has a 6 inch long arm lift with 35's

what kind of a hassel will they give me to get this thing to pass? there is no rust or rot and the tires dont hang out to far. but what will they give me crap about?

I think you only need to go through emissions, don't think they have inpection unless you get pulled over they bust your your nutz for the tires sticking out. If anything just borrow a set of stock wheels and tires

no inspection needed, just emisisons. I bought my tj from chicopee mass

nice thing about CT, no safety inspections

yep you're in luck dude. If you get pulled over you get a fix it ticket, but there's ways around that as well.

I have seen this before that out of state vehicles need inspection here in CT. I have seen a few friends buy cars from out west that had to have this and I bought a trailer from Illinois. BUT and that is a big but, it is NOT a safety inspection like done in Maine. It is only a V.I.N. and general inspection. Basically they check to see if you said it was a Red Jeep Wranger with V.I.N xxxx that this is the vehicle you have and are registering (you will get a temp plate to bring it to the inspection) and not a black Mack truck with a shaved V.I.N. This is because they don't have access to the other state's registration records. I have seen my friends show up to this inspection without seat-belts and bald tires and lights that didn't work but still no problems. I showed up with 0 lights working on my trailer (the inspector told me to turn the hazards on, so it was obvious they didn't work) and packaging hanging off it and still, he didn't look happy, but he signed off on what I needed. I know this may not apply to neighboring states but I have seen this many times for states far away.

NY just did away with emissions inspections on OBD1 vehicles pretty happy bout that!

wickedXJ is correct about it may need a vin check, BUT Emissions test covers that. An emission Test counts as being emissions compliant and counts as a vin verification. Most Emissions Test centers can also do just a Vin check for $10 , This is mainly for vehicles that either are to new to need emissions test or to old.

If it was 1 year older you would need an inspection, I believe if its 10 years or older you need one for out of state vehicle at least. Or else I would have bought a 96 Xj on 36's from Long island but, it would have needed to pass inspection so I didn't.

not true. I registered a 93 in december, previously registered in new york. No inspection, just emissions.

You never told us what state your from?
I'm guessing CT.
all out of state vehicles need the VIN inspected, and less than 20 or 25 cannot remember need emission tested which they also check your VIN at the same time.

If you need just a VIN you need to actually take it to the DMV.

If it is an instate vehicle no need to get a VIN inspected, if it needs emissions tested you need to wait until you get the letter in the mail.

Hence the reason I was looking for a CT title for my dad's comanche.
and looking for a cheap CT older S10 to build a ratrod buggy for my friend.

no inspections/emissions is great, you can still get polled over and get tickets for not meeting inspection criteria.
Which by CT law you are not allowed to alter (lift or lower) a vehicle more than 4" which never gets enforced. especially lowering.
If you go by composite vehicle rules which is more common to go by they have bump and light height rule search composite in CT DMW website for the dimensions I thin the bottom of the bumper cannot be more than 30" from the ground.

The biggest thing you will get pulled over for is tires sticking out passed the fenders. per CT law the tire needs to be completely covered from the top to the 90º behind the tire so you need mud flaps. But CT is lenient on that law to they go by the rule of thumb tires cannot stick out more than 2" passed the fenders, and I've never heard of them enforcing the mudflap rules which even stock OEM vehicles would need.

Another strange rule in the CT composites is the wheel base minimum is 80" how can you register an old CJ, mini or smart car is another gray area.

I would never live in Taxachusetts, emissions and inspections every year, never mind the rest of their dumb laws.
They enforce the 4" well the have a calculation longer wheelbase can lift more but a jeep is only allowed 4" last I knew, including tires and they measure from the door.


You should have no trouble registering the jeep in CT.
If you got a trailer you can bypass the temp plate and just trailer it to emissions/inspection.

hey man thanks!! that was very helpfull and yes sorry i am from ct and buying the jeep from mass. even tho it is a 6 inch lift it doesnt look reallly big and i have seen many vehicles that size driving around and they are on the road so i dont see why they would give me any trouble. thanks a bunch!!

not true, Since June 2010 you can get just Vin Verification done at emission's places for $10. No need to go to DMV anymore

Really? I remember it saying so in the DMV website. My parents were going to let me get this monstrous xj until they saw on the site that it would need an inspection. For $1600 (half what I paid for my current xj) I would have gotten a 96 xj with a 6" lift and 36" tsl's, a winch, and low miles I6 dropped in.
Knowing now it was probably a very bad purchase, and would have needed lots of work to support the 36's. But I could have sold the tires and made back half the money I spent...
