Small stuff like straightening out kinks in the exhaust and swapping a 99 intake would help a lot too. Don't space the TB, bore it out instead. Spacers only add .00nothing to the overall volume of the intake manifold, which already holds 4-odd liters of space. Boring out the throttle body actually increases intake volume at mid throttle.

Go do it and have the dyno sheet. I'll eat my words.
We had a professional engine builder that builds 4 digit power motors for us build a motor for Norm's car. Stroked 4.0 with the best of everything. He had almost $20k into the total build. It netted 287 on the engine dyno. I love how you compare other motors that made power to the 4.0 Its laughable. Can it be done with a ton of head work? Sure, but not the way you are talking about doing it.
P.S. our target HP range was 650 to the wheels. Unfortunately, Norm passed away before we could finish his build and his family didnt want to finish it.

The motor I referred to was closer to the 242cid displacement than anything else. And it worked.
Want proof? Drive the car it's in.

The problem with this thread is the information is so incredibly vague. It's filled with 'I know a guy, we had a guy build this' kind of stuff' but in the end no information is given.
What did 'that guy Norm' spend 20k on and why did it only net 287 horsepower? Why does Zullo think you can get 20 more horsepower? Are the limitations on the 4.0 that apparent that one can easily say you cannot get 300 horsepower from the 4.0 with new parts?
The question to both Zullo and Callahan are this: Why? No one has actually brought facts and evidence to the table. You can't just come in here and laugh and say 'No you can't do it' and 'Oh this dude did it'. What did he do? Is he lying? Okay, you can't do it. Why? I'm not an engine guy in the least but, so I want to know. Explain yourselves. Zullo vaguely touched up on why he thinks he can, but then it became a pissing match.
Information: I require it.sigpic

4.2 crank
scalloped pistons
an incredibly liberal cam
then lots of head work, talking bored out intake and exhaust ports and oversize valves.
like hux said a less restrictive exhaust manifold and a better flowing intake manifold
a motor like that can produce 300 hp, idc what anyone else says.No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

Zullo, 300 horse is possible. In fact, let's build you one that make 301.
But why stop there?? Let's make it so it magically causes dynos to read lower than 300 so it doesn't cause panties to spontaneously bunch up.2000 XJ: "The Black Jeep"MK2 Jetta > M3Chairman of the Chechnyan Space Program

Will it was Norm's car. The now deceased owner of allthingsjeep.com The motor was built by PK Machine in Mass. The car would have put down 550-625 depending on the boost. Paul (PK) said not to stretch it over 700. Hesco head, H beam rods, Forged pistons. The whole nine. It was built right. I talked with Paul many times about the motor due to my own turbo build.
I love how hopes and dreams make horsepower. Make it happen on your magical unicorn.

i was more or less stating ive never seen a 4.0 or stroker 4.0 put out 300hp...meaning ive never seen it because it probably isnt easy, common, cheap, or a combo of any of that- Will
