Funny how that stuff works, I took a 30 min class, took a test that the instructor gave us all the answers too and got an FCC License.

          a) you need to make 2 modifications, to make the compressor survive. 1) take of the top plate, and plug the vent that runs from the compression head, back into the drive body, 2) fit some sort of a fill/vent assembly to the top of the compressor. I used a grub screw to seal the passage, and a hydraulic system vent for the cap. put some compressor oil in, adn its good to go. ( IIRC, its about 100-110 ccs of oil)

          any comments on this?

I took the plate off mine and plugged, new head gaskets, tapped the intake and exhuasts for 3/8" NPT. Also tapped the oil fill for a 1/8" NPT Grease fitting, I am going to run grease in the case like the Endless Air Compressors. I am going to run a small aluminum propane tank for an air tank. I just have to make a bracket to mount the Sanden on my 4.3

I can put up some pics if you want

You need a decent sized air tank @120 or more psi to hold enough volume of air to air up if you run low pressures like me (4psi).

I know a ton of people that run this cheesy $50 compressor from pep boys, but I am always impressed with it. You will spend more converting an AC pump, but it will definately move more air... I say that yet mine isn't done yet.

I'll get some pics up soon for you tonight

                                Mine.
It is a Sanden SD 508. 5 piston 8 CID per rev... You can figure out the CFM at a given engine RPM with pretty simple math.

Make sure the unit is not seized, has compression, and the clutch works.

                                Start
Tear down - remove 5 head bolts from rear

                                Oiling oriface to be plugged

Clean head, I chose to tap the ports to 3/8"NPT for simplicity and a secure, leak free connection. Drill them out to 9/16 (I think the you are actually supposed to used a 37/64" drill bit to tap 3/8"NPT but 9/16 is very close.) This is made easy if you can get access to a milling machine, but can be done by hand.

My head gaskets ripped when I took the compressor apart so I had to order a new kit...It was like 6 bucks from acparts.com

                                Everything clean

Tap the correspoding hole in the valve plate for 1/4"-20. You could probably weld it shut but I was worried about it warping. You could also plug the hole in the compressor body, but you might want to tear it down farther to get any metal shavings out of the case.

I used a 1/4"-20 Stainless set screw and red Loc-tite. Even it it gets loose it can't go far

I trimmed the excess of the set screw and smoothed it with a right angle die grinder

While I was in there I drained the case

Chase the threads with a 1/8"NPT Tap (the threads for the stock plug are very close to this, I think 3/8-24)

I flushed the case with some ATF about 5 times to make sure all the metal was out

                                1/8" NPT Zerks

Installed and reassembled- A lot like an endless air

That wasn't very hard. The hardest part for me will be making the bracket. This is a stock compressor off of a Cherokee, so if you have a Cherokee you have the brackets already.

I have also read only Sandens will withstand this type of use. Sanden compressors "are intended for AC use only" but many internet testimonials use them with success for OBA. Sanden compressors will have SD cast into the head or similar.

Endless Air sells a compressor built in this fashon, they recommend a couple pumps of grease every 5000km. I think they also recommend running a coalescing filter in the discharge of the compressor. Even with the grease conversion, you will probably wind up with "less than dry" air. Every post on a forum I read that was about people using grease or a heavier oil said the compressor ran cooler and required less lubrication.

I have yet to finish mine. When I get some time to built a bracket, I will get back into it. Hope this helps and good luck.
