I have a cheap flip up I bought from Sears and it works perfectly fine and I dont feel too bad if I accidently drop it or whatever. I used to use an auto-darkening helmet when I worked in a body shop and it was great. I think if you were to be welding tubing (doing cages for example), an auto-darkening would be worth the extra money!

Autodark helmets are one of those things that you have to look at the specs of it not the price. If your budget is 50 bucks your most likely not going to find a decent mask.
I personally run a 100 dollar lowes helmet. I have yet to be flashed by it after a couple years of having it. I would like to upgrade to a nicer helmet, but even my 100 dollar version is a huge leap forward from a regular flip down.
Quick summary, solar recharge helmets wont shut off so you wont get accidently flashed. per this guide you want a helmet with a sub 1 millisec responce time.

I love them because you can see exactly where you're about to start your weld. i never use a mask when i tack, probably a bad practice, but i either look away or shut my eyes.
I love auto darkeners though, so easy, so sweeet, honestly there is no reason not to like them.
The helmet i have though is a speedglas (solar charged, u can see the solar panel above the lens, and it stays dark after you finish your bead), which is made for industrial use, basically a 200 helmet i got for free from my old shop teacherNo worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

Purchase this. Cheap and reliable. Works and you can vary the tint from 9-13 shade. Auto darkening is what i use for arc, mig and tig.

I seriously have no complaints with it after welding my bumpers and other various things on my jeep and also using it for mig tig and arc in class. You can adjust the delay and sensitivity and the tint.
