I hate flip downs. one less thing to worry about and you cant see what you are doing right before you pull that trigger. with auto darkening (especially for beginner welders like me) I like to be in the right spot before I start my weld.

97 TJ that I think is pretty neat.

i have a miller autodarkener... i like it much better than the flip down for the reasons stated above....

I have a sellstrom. The only problem I have with it is that the auto-darkening feature is on a timer and if you don't use it for a while it turns off. If i'm in a rush I usually end up flashing myself

                      That's TERRIBLE.

I've got the flipdown that came with the welder I purchased and I plan on using it a bit while I practice with the welder before I get an auto darkener. Some of the advice here is good, though, keep it coming. When I practiced last night I used the flip down and I definitely liked the wider field of view. Using the 110v with .025 (all I had) wire was good but I need to practice more and get better penetration on the steel. Then, not going to lie, when I sat down with the 220v I got a little crazy when welding the 3/16 plate and burned a hole right through it once. Ooops. After an hour of welding plate last night, I think I definitely have my foot in the door for general purpose welding.

Regardless, Will and I are gonna educate ourselves more on this stuff, so thanks for the advice in advanced.

I have the speedglas helmet and like it, it is a little expensive though. My dad has a kobalt one from lowes he got for around a 100 dollars and it works pretty good.

I have a northen auto darkening mask works great and the price was right! Its really personal preference for the most part as long as the features work correctly. Regular masks are more durable though..
