Welding is all seat time. I can teach you to TIG in an hour and send you on your way to practice. Yes, its that easy.
X2!!! we had a 5 minute demo and then just endless hours of nothing but TIG welding. I actually picked it up rather quick, didnt feel like it was difficult at all. That is.... when the work piece is flat on a table right in front of you, but when you start getting into awkward positions is when it starts to get hard.
I still feel like its a lot more fun to do than MIG though.
I feel like welding for the most part is pretty easily with a little practice. the toughest part of welding is when you have shitty materials or retarted positions to work with.

I found the hardest part was getting the machine settings correct for the material thickness and position your welding in.

Justin W. gave me a 3 minute disertation on how to TIG weld aluminum and stuck a filler rod in my hand after a couple cocktails and said go for it.
You end up figuring it out, tig is all feel.
bumping a two yrea old thread..... ohh well, booze will do that, will i'll teach you to weld, Claytonian protege style
in complete honesty... i have a big ole tig. tried it once. really didnt know what i was doing. and i never have the time to sit down and learn cuz usually when i weld i just wana get shit done......
so, would u like to come play in my garage and figure my machine out with me sometime? i can supply beer, jack, maybe a burger or 2?

Throw me some money and mybe I'll be nice to let you try.
The theory is easy then it is all practice.
If you have a hard time with gas you will have a hard time with Tig.
I like Tig a lot better smoother, more control, no sparks but its so slow when your welding miles of thick crap not so much fun.
I have both so depends what I'm welding which welder I grab.
I cannot believe that gun smith school teaches stick welding, what the hell would you ever stick weld on a gun.
Laser or Tig welding yes stick no.
Caution to welding courses most are for stick welding and certifications to weld bridges and buildings. You would want an automotive base welding class.
My school WIT in boston had evening welding course I only took the mig and Tig course left the stick and advance stick to the other guys I haven't need to stick anything in my garage yet.
Best thing to do to learn how to weld take the money you would spend on a class and buy a welder just give it a try mess with the settings and see what happens.
Let me know if you find something that is worth taking.
Lincoln and Hobart I think have great welding schools but not around hear if you really want.
And if you don't have access to a Tig no real reason to learn how to use it.
Just use straight argon
Some even go to helium when you get to needing very high coverage like magnesium and titanium but I've never needed to use helium because I never weld any exotic materials.
Co2 just corrodes the metal to fast to Tig you might get away with a tiny bit, but definitely not the Mig ratio I forget off hand what it is. I've tried it.
Our welding lab at school mixed their own ratios.
The guy is very informative I think I watched every video, hope it works at home.
He also sells them as a DVD.
And I just got the Tig finger it is just a thermo cover sleeve but I couldn't find where to get that stuff so I just bought it from him for thanks for putting the videos together.
It really works nice to rest your finger to keep your torch nice and steady.
