I Learned all my welding shit at the local community college. We had a instructor who has been doin it for like 40 yrs. We started with all torch work and then moved on from there. Torch is slow enough that you can really learn about your weld pool and penetration. If you want, I'll bring my textbook to the m&g with me and let you borrow it for a while (I will need it back in a while tho). It has a ton of in depth info about everything related to welding and is a great resource. Let me know if you want it for a few months.

The problem I had with the torch, while slow and tedious, it was still a torch and I would get all concentrated and then I would get the torch too close to the metal and then POP! torch would go out, slag would be everywhere and My Heart would be exploding in my chest. First day of stick welding was probably the most nerve wrecking day of gunsmith school.

When torch is used as a learning experience... It is all about dicipline. Everything you use to be sucessful with a torch becomes useful later on with arc methods. It takes time, but it's definitely worth it. If you can lay a good bead with a torch and mild steel filler, with good penetration, you will likely pick up everything else easily. And with good habits already.

Also, a word of advice to anyone wo wants to learn oxy-fuel, go out to your local welding supply house and get a good pair of welding glasses (not the goggle kind... The type that look and feel like safety glasses). They make a huge difference in comfort.

I thought about taking some up here. The issue I can into was that most classes were not about begining welding, they were about metal working. One I looked at in Manchester (I know its too far, just trying to give you an idea) and Enfield. Both incorporated welding, but the focus was "ornamental iron working". In other words they taught you how to make decorative shit out of tin and sheet metal, and tack weld it together to creative artistic projects that you were ultimately graded. The focus was not learning the different types of welders and and being proficient at it, but just learning how to make a quick zap to hold the craft stuff together.

Welding is all seat time. I can teach you to TIG in an hour and send you on your way to practice. Yes, its that easy.

I am a self taught welder but I would be more than willing to have you come up if you like. I don't do much anymore that isn't at the shop and on the clock for customers but I may be able to set something up on a weekend if you guys want to get something together and give everyone some seat time and learn as a small group.

Plus the fact you want to learn to TIG. MIG is mostly a point and shot affair and people will pay for dimes.
