              honestly

if you can weld sheet metal, you can weld damn near anything.

for me it was just practice practice practice. the class taught me some basic shit, which is good to know.

the omly ktmracer customs lesson i signed up for was trying to weld 5/16 box tube to rotted unibody sheetmetal, single ply.

needless to say, it went poorly for me

I've heard a lot of people say that as their reasoning for taking street rod as opposed to Chassis fab. But we have had a number of guys come over from street rod and try to weld some 1/8th inch and just not get any penetration, which really isnt that thick. I'm sure with a little more time they would be able to but it was definitely a foot in mouth moment for them.

kudos to them though, Sheet metal is a bitch.

Yeah, I tried doing the same. Didn't work out well. The sheetmetal simply...evaporated.

More reason to learn though. I think I did a pretty decent job welding those pieces of chrome-moly thought.

I had no idea how to weld 6 months ago. Then a friend's brother, who has access to a full shop (where a guy is building a HUGE chopped XJ and a 10" ZJ for DD) put two u-bolts in front of me and just showed me a little. I was able to put them together with almost no problem. I still have them and can't get them apart.
