i think it's definitely something to think about. yes, guns were used in this, but the people behind these awful acts are not right in the head. is it always noticeable? who knows. but if neighbors and families and friends say the same thing after each of these crimes (he was always quiet, always off, strange, etc) something could have been done. what i'm curious to find out is apparently the mother and him (adam lanza) had an argument the day before, and how he acted towards her, if it is anything like this blog author talked about with her son

Obama was in Newtown tonight and spoke.

Westboro is on their way up.

Multiple gun dealers where called over the weekend with threats of firebombing if they did not shot selling firearms.

It's too close to Christmas and hopefully won't ruin the spirit of the holiday in our country.

Not saying you're necessarily wrong, but I don't think it's that easy. I don't know the background of the crimes well enough to comment on a personal level, but you can't discriminate against a child because they are "a little off", or "strange". I knew plenty of classmates in my high school that could be classified under the same adjectives, but they have yet to kill anyone. I'll be the first to admit, I did borderline inhumane things as a child, that were part of me growing up, and I know others who have had similar experiences. I now work for the U.S. Navy, and feel that I do good for the country every day of my life.

To put it simply, I don't think it is as black and white as some people think when they reflect back on instances like this.

It's this exactly why people are straying from the mental stability issue when it comes to this case. Guns are black and white and easy to blame, it's an object. BAN THEM!

Mental stability, schizophrenia, and bi-polar issues range so far into that 'gray area' that we cannot simply just give kids medicine and forget about it; we already do that and it doesn't exactly work. These are the issues that we need to focus on, not anything else when trying to solve or attempt to understand a tragedy like this.

I will say that Newtown is a very different place this weekend. I don't know that it will ever go back to the way that it was. It has gone from a place no one had ever heard of, that I had to describe as "an hour from hartford and 20 mins from New York", to a place that takes up every space on the yahoo homepage. It is an unbelievably awful thing that has taken place here, and it feels surreal seeing the streets flooded with reporters and news vans. Seeing the the president sitting in the same seats I sat in in high school is something that I will never forget.

If those westboro nutjobs do show up here to protest, they are the lowest form of scum as far as I'm concerned. I understand they are exercising their rights but this is neither the time nor place for that.

i read this this afternoon and am still having trouble processing it because it devastates me that people clearly need help have to go to such great lengths to "create a paper trail" or else nothing can be done. when people come forward to get help there should be no grey area.

i see parents every day deny a diagnosis that experts are giving their children (Autism, Aspberger's, PDD, Bipolar Disorder, etc). the woman who wrote this is a brave woman for being able to admit the truth but unfortunately not every parent is able to see this in their children.

i see both sides of the gun argument. i know that people who want to get their hands on a gun will find one, legally or illegally. i admit i am not all that educated on the gun control debate. all that aside though, after hearing that each victim had multiple gun shot wounds i can't help but agree with the people who feel there should be something done. i know the parents are not necessarily to blame here but for Nancy Lanza to have taught her son, who clearly had issues, how to use guns and keep them in her house leaves a lot to think about.

Literally never. Gun control is such an easy solve all in peoples minds.

My mother just had an argument with me that every gun in the United States should be taken away and made illegal.

She had no argument whatsoever to back up that desire other than the fact that guns have killed people before.

I presented her a scenario where if someone broke into my house tonight to shoot me to steal my equipment, I would defend myself with my gun, however in her world that same scenario would leave me likely dead(and Nicole). Her response was "well it is unlikely that would occur where you live." Which is naturally what everybody says, until it happens to them...unless of course they have a scope of perspective outside of their little bubble. What if I lived in Bridgeport? Detroit? Camden? Any number of places in the country that are considered "bad". Lets just ignore the fact "bad things" can happen anywhere. Look at Sandy Hook, ironically enough. The gun ban would not just effect Shelton/Fairfield, CT.

She also claimed that "assault weapons" should be made illegal. I asked her to define an assault weapon. She couldnt give me even part of an answer, she literally had no idea what an "assault weapon" was. Period. But she wanted them banned, enough that she was signing a petition and asking others to do the same.

That is why this issue will always be one. Widespread ignorance with the people exercising it showing no intent to educate themselves beyond what they see in a news headline.
