    • 2.2 miles into the trail at the Specimen Ridge trail intersection which we take to get back to the road.

2.5 miles into the trail. Some hikers in the valley ahead of us if you look close.

Bernie and a big piece of Bison shiat.

      Bison fur.

Back to the Specimen Ridge trailhead. We had to walk a .25 of a mile or so on the road back to the car.

      • We started hiking from the Yellowstone River Picnic Area trailhead at 430pm and made it back at 630pm.

It took us 2 hours to hike the 3.5 mile trail.

Picture taken across the street from where I live. The Cygnet fire burning pretty good. The road from Canyon Village to Norris Junction is closed as of 5pm today because the fire is "very" close to the road.

Picture taken from outside my door. The Cygnet fire blocking the sun.

        • I hiked Mount Washburn on July 11th as part of the normal 6.5 mile round trip to the top and back.

I hiked Mount Washburn on July 25th as part of the 11.5 mile Mount Washburn Spur Trail.

My Dad was in town and we decided it would be a great hike to do on his 65th birthday.

I left Canyon Village, WY around 730am on September 3rd with the goal of summiting Mount Washburn.

Mount Washburn (elevation 10,243 feet) is the highest peak in the Washburn Range, but only the 31st highest peak in Yellowstone National Park.

The Mount Washburn trailhead (elevation 8,859) is only around 5 miles north of Canyon Village where I live. Left around 745am.

Temperature was 30* when leaving Canyon Village.

Warmed to 40* when starting the hike.

          Mount Washburn trail map.

First view of the summit building 1 mile up.

Bear had been on the trail recently.....

View of the road, the red sky due to fires and moon after 1.5 miles.

Bear! on the trail, which delayed us nearly 25 minutes.

It was paying little to no attention to us.

Bear looking for and eating some green stuff.

            • The bear was up a tree 2 feet off the trail for nearly 10 minutes throwing branches and pines cones onto the trail to eat.

We also passed a woman that we wanted to wait for because she was by herself, had no bear spray and had headphones on.

"I see that pine cone I tossed from my tree"

              "Nom Nom Nom"

                  • "More food"

We decided to take a short cut because the bear would just not move off the trail.

The bear mirrored us to the other side of the tree / trail, which made me a little nervous, but did not keep following us.
