a college degree doesnt make someone an expert or a professional, as evidenced by my experience, though it does show you were willing to do what was needed to get ahead
i went into college already being 100% beyond everything they were going to teach me about photoshop and video...i didnt go to learn my craft, i went to get the paper for later- Will

does a gunsmithing trade (certificate? degree?) get you a job in something else other than gunsmithing? maybe but it will be a stretch versus a degree from a liberal arts college or similar- Will

Of course not, but I knew that going in to the school. I'm not saying you made a bad decision, I'm just saying that I made my decision based off the fact that the college life didn't appeal to me and sitting in lecture didn't either.sigpic

I agree with this ^^^^^^^ some of the best practical engineers I know didnt make it past the 9th grade..
As for me, while i didnt mind some classes i really hate school with a burning passion, i think a big part of it is the school (CCSU) and this hell hole state. I cant wait to be done with it and get out of this state.98 Cherokee, D30/8.25 w/4.56s locked F/R -- 3 link front IRO springs rear with shackle relocation, one ton steering w/heims, hybrid cage under contruction, 33'' KM2's

And sadly, that 'degree' I got from PGS is easily the most useless thing I've ever earned. All it does is say I complete the program, but you could have been a complete moron and did the bare minimum in the school and get the same degree I did. I was lucky to have my boss take me in as he did because a lot of people call themselves gunsmiths and yet can't figure out how to reassemble even the most basic rifle. If my shop ever shut down, Yeah, I'd have to find another job in my field, it's not the greatest thing ever, but those are the risks I knew I was taking.
But I had a good time there, regardless, like I said before. The parties were low key because it was mostly an older crowd. We'd take over the end of a dead end street and put the deep frier and the grill in the middle and cook, and sit around and eat. Only a few people ever got piss faced drunk.
The atmosphere was the same, low key and while we all had our own nicknames, the school was small, everyone knew each other and if you couldn't handle the work, you left, if you couldn't handle the ball breaking, you left. I'm not proud, but some guys and myself pissed some dude off so bad one day he picked up his tool box and left. Shouldn't have driven his Mazda over a curb and scratched up his rims.
But lets get real, I didn't go to college because I didn't want to take another math class.sigpic

"Do something you love and you'll never work a day in your life"
Something to be said for that as well. Limited degree or not, life isnt worth working somewhere that makes you miserable, so you might as well make the most of working cuz we all gotta do it.
id rather have a limited degree than a vast one that gets me a job i hate
i remember i made a thread her awhile ago, not sure if it was this or the old forum, i will have to search. it was a poll asking if people would rather work a job they love and have way less money, or a job they hate and be filthy rich. or maybe it was how much people worked. ima search- Will

I'm currently a Junior in college, and I'd like to think that its gotten better every year that I've spent here.
It's nice to live on your own so to speak (away from your family) but still live with people (roommates etc). College life is way more relaxed than my life at home, so I view it as a vacation every time the semester starts. My favorite part about being here is the ability to be around intelligent people and learn from professors who know their shit, and who live for helping students.
Some aspects I hate, like the various nonsense required classes I have to take and the unbearable stream of group projects. Sharing a room with someone also gets annoying at times, but I've been relatively lucky in that arena.
My personal opinion is that I learn more on the job than I would in school, but to even get that job, I need this piece of paper. So I figure I might as well do the best I can, learn the most that I can, and have the best time that I can while I'm here.
