i could go to school for analog video editing.......

.......too bad that went out the window years ago........ the fault is mine, not the changing workplace.

You need to adapt, the jobs in steel are decreasing while jobs in plastics and renewable resources are on the rise..... adjust to the changing marketplace. EVery company has to do this. Music industry had to adjust to the online world. Video rental stores had to adapt to netflix and on demand video rentals. Car companies have had to adjust to higher fuel standards. It's part of the nature of the beast.

I don't mean to be dissentary, but what other than teach english and copy edit productions would you do with an english major?? Most authors are either professors or just people that said, i'm bored, i think i'll write a book.

Limited fields, i was going to school for Journalism, newspapers are steadily on their way out, jobs are scarce. I changed my major to engineering, something more flexible that could cover a larger base of potential careers. I couldn't afford to have student loans, i went to community college and recieved the same degree someone that went to another more expensive state school recieved.
No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

The idea that there is nothing stopping a poor person from buying a suit a starting a business is absurd.

Said person is poor , unable to afford a suit.

Being poor, may not have a solid housing situation. Where is said business supposed to be started?

No education, or poor education means his validity and professionalism will be called into question immediately.

Being poor isn't a life choice, its a situation many people are stuck in, not just an excuse.

You're right, being poor isn't a life choice, but doing something about it is. I'm not poor but I'm not rich either, but it seems there is no point into going into a discussion about people in my own immediate family who had everything, lost it all and then rebuilt their lives after complete devastation and financial ruin because it's almost old hat now a days.

Sell fucking drugs then its a business. Sell weed, make enough money to start a life in a couple of months. problem solved.

People in poverity can work out of it. This is why i always spend at least $200 whenever i go to the strip club. think of it as my way of stimulating the economy, while i get stimulated.....

Try as they might, not many poor people have the tools; education, capital, or support.

I can read, write, communicate effectively and intelligently, carry on intelligent conversations and i am certainly no english major. You just need to be a generally amicable person.

If you're an English Major, teach English, teach other teachers how to teach English. Ever try Pedagogy? My mother is an English Teacher and she got her masters in English AFTER getting a degree in Public Relations and working the PR field, doing exactly what Nicole does now.

Yeah, it sucks that you may look at that piece of paper on your wall and go 'Fuck, that's useless', so you try something else.

this. there's a reason i changed my mind senior year of HS from teaching to communications. if i went to school for teaching, i'd still be in school now, and the jobs are veryyyyy limited right now.

Once again, the old cliche comes in: Many immigrants came here with no education, capital, support or tools yet many still made it big.

Times have changed, I know, but it doesn't change the idea or the work ethic.

a factory worker (production line) needs no more than a high school education to get that job. A job with decent pay and benefits.

Thats another reason that we need to bring manufacturing jobs back into America, because these are the jobs that uneducated people in urban settings usually held.

I mean look at all the empty factories in bridgeport and waterbury, thousands of jobs that at one point in time were perfectly capable of supporting someone with a family in an urban setting, all of which are no more.
