  • Just the IRS looking for their piece of the pie...

Nicole (or someone) is going to have to educate me on this one because I have a feeling she is more in tuned to what the IRS has a say in with companies giving stuff away.

Fan Who Caught Jeter's 3,000th Hit May Owe IRS Thousands
The tax man may be on the hunt for the super fan who caught Derek Jeter's 3,000th hit.

Christian Lopez, 23, recovered the prized ball his father fumbled after The Captain hammered it into their section of the stands in the third inning of the Yankees' win over Tampa Bay on Saturday.

The Verizon salesman from Highland Mills, N.Y., gave the ball back to Jeter, whom he called an "icon," and the Yankees lavished a slew of prizes, including luxury box seats for every remaining home game this season and post-season and some signed memorabilia, upon him.

Now the IRS wants a piece. The prizes Lopez received are estimated to be worth more than $32,000 -- and, like game show contestants, Lopez may have to pay taxes on the gifts and prizes because the IRS considers them income.

Some estimate the IRS will put Lopez on the hook for anywhere between $5,000 and $13,000, reports the Daily News.

If it comes down to that, Lopez says he'll pay the tax man because he's not about to relinquish his seats. The young government major says his family and friends will help him out.

"The IRS has a job to do, so I'm not going to hold it against them, but it would be cool if they helped me out a little on this," Lopez told the News.

The specially marked home run ball Lopez returned to Jeter was estimated to have been worth about $250,000 to $300,000 at auction.

They couldn't just give the guy the stuff? The IRS seriously needs a cut of it? If the Yankees are so happy to have the ball back, why didn't they offer to pay the IRS and give the guy the stuff as well? "Thanks for the ball and here is a few thousand to get the IRS off your ass". I understand our government is hurting a bunch but Holy Christ the IRS is getting asinine. Pay taxes on 'Gifts and Prizes'? What the FUCK.

they cannot tax him on it unless he provides his SSN. i'm sure they would push legal action if he was stubborn and didn't give it to them.

any prize valued at $600 or more needs a 1099. whenever i give away a prize that's over $600, the winners have to complete an affidavit and provide their SSN. since he didn't 'agree' to sign up for anything, as far as i can see, they can't really push him for this. when you sign up for a contest or sweeps you have to agree to the official rules/terms before you can officially enter...so unless the Yankees have some sort of terms on their tickets or whatnot i'd be curious how they will fight for it

They should never transfer the tickets to his name, just let him show up and sit there.

Sounds like the guy jumped right on board with it though, saying that he'd pay for it and that his family would help him out...that's what I don't get...

See, this is exactly what I was looking for! This isn't a sweepstakes though, there are no 'terms of use' or official rules, he gave them a ball back, they rewarded him with tickets to every home game and a bunch of other stuff and now the IRS is like 'hey hey hey now, where is out fucking piece of the pie?'

This could only ever make sense if they thought the kid planned on Selling all that stuff but I sure as fuck wouldn't unless I really needed to!

Sadly, this, at least he would have had the money to pay .gov back...He did the right thing giving the ball back to the Stadium / Jeter, but no good deed goes unpunished...

I don't see how giving the ball back is the right thing. As soon as the ball enters the stands its the fans property, you don't have to give it back.

If the Yankees/Jeter really wanted it that badly, they could've bought it.

The kid is a clown for passing up 250k

It was the right thing because it was a selfless act. Was it the Smart thing? Fuck no.

Since there's no contest and this is more of a personal exchange from the Yankees baseball club to a fan... IRS shouldn't have anything to do with it. If he doesn't provide a SSN (which I'm sure the Yankees clubhouse didn't ask for upon receipt of the ball) then, as Nicole mentioned, there's nothing they can do. Sounds like horseshit.
