My guess is for liability purposes they make you wear one. Chances are someone would sue the mountain if they knocked their brains, it's pretty sad. I remember a few years back a guy was mountain biking on a local trail, fell and broke his arm, and sued the town for uneven terrain on the trail. people suckP8R
