could of also been the water pump pushing an air bubble up

do a compression and leak down test before you rip it apart

This what I always do but put the pressure pump on the radiator if you see the gauge on the radiator moving up when you put air in the cylinder clear sign that your head gasket is bad.

You don't actually need the leak down gauges but nice.
You can use the trick they showed on trucks. get a spark plug smash out the porcelain and weld on an air fitting.

But cherokees are know for being hard to bleed all the air out so make sure you are getting good heat in the cab. Good heat usually indicates the air is out of the coolant system and the water is flowing smoothly.

Another indication if the coolant system becomes instantly pressurized right after you start it.

            Good luck,
            ~Justin

coolant coming out when someone rev's it with the radiator cap off wouldnt surprise me. are you losing coolant ? hows the oil look ? how's the coolant look ?. if you know anyone at a emission station nearby you could ask them to put the exhaust probe over the coolant with cap off and see if its giving off any hydro carbons (HC)
