when i reverse this sound like a power steering pump whining happens....... have no idea where it's coming from though. guh?

does it make the sound just sitting still? or only when you are moving? and why don't you have someone pop it in reverse and hold the brake while you listen around the vehicle and under the hood for where it might be coming from if it does it sitting still.-Ryan

rear pinion seal? had almost the same thing happen to me, only really noticeable going slow in reverse1992 xj Briarwood

Maybe your front pump is going out. Your highest line pressure is when you're in reverse so that may be why it whines then.
