  • Oerheating/running like crap

Randomly, my XJ will blink the check gauges light and the temp gauge will spike. It goes away sometimes if i turn on the heat and blast it, but after it does this, if i turn it off then crank it again it skips and lopes like it thinks it's a big block. coolant is full, oil doesnt have water. anyone have an idea what it could be?

How does your oil/coolant look? Does your CEL flash?

Coolant looks a little brown, but it had red and i poured the ready-mix green in it like three weeks ago. oil looks good, no water.

my legacy did this for awhile, the temp gauge spiked and went back down. it didn't seem like it was overheating though. it started stalling like yours. after 2 weeks it wouldn't stay running. turns out the head gasket had a pinhole that got worse till it was blown

Head gaskets arent that bad on a 4.0. If you do it I can give you a hand. I did a Cylinder head swap on mine.

colant temp sensor? for the loping problem maybe? Id flush the cooling system and run some regular green in there its supposedly bad to mix the different colored ones. Could also be a bad thermostat causing brief overheating..

Mine did that when the temp control sensor went. Its the sensor on the front of the motor in the T-stat housing. I used to have to go full fuel to start my Jeep and it ran like absolute shit

apparently, my dad didnt know or bother to look at what kind of coolant i was using (red) and put green in. i've read that they don't mix, and that together they eat stuff. could this be the problem?

yes proably. And first off your XJ takes green coolant. go get the system flushed out and start from there.

Times too on the head gasket, if I turns out that's what's up it's really not all that bad, I'd be more than willin to lend a hand.

Also, my old BMW would do the dame thing, erratic temp spikes with CEL (or BMW equivalent) turned out it was indeed a blown head gasket, just a small leak that would cause a pocket of superheated air to cycle in, and when that air hit the temp unit it would freak the fuck out...
