  • differential tech question

so my jeeps been down due to a blown rear end. I got a complete axle and swapped in basically everything besides axle shaft's and pinion gear. Goes down the road accelerating/on the throttle just fine, but coasting/slowing down loud howling. I used the spacers from the doner axle as mine broke during bearing blow out. so my question is, obviously the howling is because the spacing isnt correct between R&P.... now if thats the case, is there a place that sell's different thickness spacer's and which way does it need to be moved ?

now im just guessing thats what the howling is from since it only does it while coasting (pinion riding on other side of ring gear) . I have little to no experience in setting up gear's so more experienced users please chime in. I did all this outside tonight (12 degree's out) so i didnt feel like tearing it all back down

      used gears?

      they will whine

your pinion depth should be acceptable

all you gotta set is the carrier preload and backlash

and to get used gears PERFECT you need to mimic the wear pattern, or else they will whine

will the whine wear in as i run the gear's or will it whine and premature wear everything until the preload and backlash is set ? im dont plan spending more money then i have to on my current axle. early spring my jeep should be off the road again for axle upgrades while i drive my 81 c10.

I made a post on JF about it and got all the internet mechanic's and worst case scenarios etc. so some real world info is nice to have.

used gears whine unless you get the old gear pattern perfect

i set carrier preload to "when you have to tap the carrier in with a 3 lb deadblow a few times"

and you should look up the specs for backlash, but a cheap trick is to run a piece of paper between the ring and pinion and if the paper rips its too tight, you want it just above that ripping point
