  • V8 emissions testing

I am going to try to bring my YJ to get the emissions done next week so it will once again make it to the trails. I am unsure if it will pass since it is still registered as a 4 cylinder and now has a carb'd V8. It doesnt have any power-robbing smog crap on it but it does have a cat. I think, since it is a 88, it only gets the sniff test. What can I do to help ensure it passes emissions?

You do only need the sniffer test. I hope to see that thing on the trails soon!

Get the tank low and add like 5 bottles of dry gas to the tank. Works like a charm.

i wouldnt worry about it, in ct it doesnt matter what size motor its registered as, just make sure you tell the emissions tech what size motor is in it. That way your limits will be based on motor size you have, not what came with the jeep originally. as long as you have a cat on and the jeeps running good it should pass. Also be sure your tailpipe extends to the end of the vehicle or out the side. If it ends over/before rear axle, they will tell you that you need to fix that before it can be tested (cant put exhaust probe/vent hose over dyno )

How would I make it pass?

Buy a junk pre-emmision cj-7 with a good title and put the tags and front clip on your jeep.

Good idea Owen but for the mean time, Ill retard the timing, dump some Dry Gas in it and put some 93 in the tank.

So I went in to Auto Zone to pick up a couple bottles of Heet and I ran into a kid I know who does emissions. I told him my situation and that I have an emissions test Monday with his shop. He said that having a V8 isnt too big of an issue. I just need to remind him when he goes to test it that I have a 360 in it and he will change the motor size in the computer for it. It makes me feel a little better knowing that Ill have to pass under the 5.9 liter emissions rather than the 2.5 liter emissions. I'll still have to retard the timing, run high test and the Heet since I dont have the smog crap on it. He says that a lot of people do the swaps in S-10's and whatnot so its a common thing.

Don't retard the timing. Just throw some dry gas in and beat the shit out of it before you get there. You may have a problem with passing. Different vehicles have different acceptable levels depending on motor. They will go by the VIN. It will need to pass the 4cyl parameters. Technically it should still pass.

told ya btw, bigger the motor = tighter limit's. most 4 bangers have higher emission limit's then a v8. if you were closer to north-east ct i could run a diag on the dyn and see what your jeep is reading. (same thing as actual test just doesnt count/use vehicle vin etc)
