I run spool in the rear and Detroit up front. Great. Just need hydro.

I used to unlock one hub between obstacles to make it easier before hydro assist. But from my ball joint centerline to my tire centerline is like 7-8"
      ? What

Explain why a spool or a locker makes any difference when your tires aren't driving the axle.

And you had hydro assist and still had problems turning?

Spools all day long here, as long as you have hub locks or don't drive it on the road.
I don't like the wind up of the lockers waiting for them to engage.

If your trail riding who cares if you have to back up.

Because when your tires aren't driving the axle there isn't load to apply the locker. With a spool there is no locking or more importantly unlocking with no load.
Especially if you have a large scrub radius. With a spool its impossible for the wheel to roll, which it has to do to turn. Locker will unlock and the wheel will roll, making it steer better at rest.
As I said before, with the wheel centerline close to the balljoint center line this isnt much of a problem.
I never said I had a problem turning with hydro assist. I said before hydro assist I would unlock one hub to make it easier. But yes even with assist, low backspace wheels, a welded front and 40" tires, it can be hard to turn in some situations. I would much prefer a locker, but money was better spent else where.

I've turned a spooled front end on pavement lock to lock with 40" tires.....

In fact the common set up lately is spool front, detroit rear.

But still i don't think with 35" tires, it'll matter at all if u run a spool or a regular ratcheting front locker. All the side effects are mostly exaggerated.
No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

I do agree. I run a detroit rear welded front. The biggest difference like I said is the scrub radius. My jeep was impossible to turn without assist on flat ground in 4x4. With assist it turns fine. Leaves nice tire marks on the pavement too
It literally drags one tire across the pavement. Obviously if the tire pivots close to the steering centerline than a spool will have no effect as the tire doesnt need to roll to turn. Its an issue when the tires have to roll to turn. I measure half assed one day and steering my front end lock to lock the tire rolled something like 6" on each side. (in an arch)
