  • Aussie locker tech...

So I havent worked on a lunchbox locker since...probably 2005.

I have an aussie in the 8.25 i bought for my black jeep, recently i was driving up a dirt hill, not hammering necessarily hard at all, and it fucked itself somehow.
under a sudden or mild load, it will sometimes make a horrid noise, similar to what they sound like when they are unloading (maybe thats exactly what its doing)...and if i stay on it hard it will ratchet that horrid noise...super fawkin loud.

i took the cover off and the locker is 100% physically intact, not damaged. I am wondering if the culprit is the springs...perhaps they are worn or not applying the necessary tension, thus making the locker spread apart under load and skip teeth?

anyone have any idea on this? maybe even worn teeth? they looked ok without removing the locker, but not sure if with it out it would tell a different story.

i have no idea how old the aussie in the axle is or how hard it was used, maybe Brian (cherokee at 16) will have that info if needed (his old axle with locker)

Sounds like the clearances on the outside of it is too loose. Most likely needs more shimming because it's trying to lock just doesn't go far enough together

def. check your shims ...the tolerances on aussies are very tight...too loose they dont engage too tight they rachet like hell til ya blow it up...either way not good....

before this dirt hill it was wheeled in new hampshire (not to mention driven around a shatload) and never made a single noise, which is what has me scratching my head

Call up Aussie, when I bought mine it came with some kind of corrosion and a new one was overnighted. Really great helpful guys, we talked after hours from his cell to make sure it all worked out.

I had a similar problem. It was the shimming.

I got so tired of its' road behavier that I just put spiders back in the carrier. If you put an 8.8 in your XJ, I have the locker if you want it.

                Center gap (SPEC= .145- .170)
between spacers and pinion shaft (SPEC=.006-.020)

use feeler gauges and check the tolerances. if they are in or out, add/remove shims

The washers under the side gears are selective washers. You will have to measure, figure out the difference of what you need if it is incorrect and call the dealer for the proper thickness washer.

That never happened when it was under my jeep. It unloaded sometimes but not what your describing.

Aren't the shims just the stock shims that go between the spiders and carrier? I remember the directions saying to look them over and replace if warped or something like that, or maybe it was put them on the same way they came off, there weren't any other shims though. I bet Aussie will have an answer already.

The locker was installed may of 2011 and was not wheeled on that much, certainly not abused.

i got fed up with troubleshooting and i am just removing this locker...which has become a fun experience itself.

i have the crosspin out, we have all the pins/springs out. we have the passenger side axle shaft out. i cant get the center section of the locker to come out no matter what i do, and i cant get the drivers side c clip out either. there just isnt enough room. it seems like the center section is just freely jostling around in there, but something is preventing it from coming all the way out.

any suggestions? WTF am i missing?

don't know if it matters but when installing mine with both shafts out it would ONLY go in 1 piece at a time in the right order. drove me crazy. might have to come out that way too.

did you check the clearances and try to fix it first?
