For the money you can spend trying to put the front and rear in I wouldn't say its worth it. If it were me i would find a rear 44 and "beef up" your 30 and wheel it until you have the time and experience to do this.

I don't mean to discourage you, but like a buggy build, axles can end up costing exponentially more than planned with not a huge gain in reliability and toughness IMO. Maybe do some more research before you start?

And waggy 44s are very common, hell i have one sitting in my carport that i got for 25 bucks.

As Alex said, building axles cost far more than you may think. By the time you add gears, bearings, u-joints, brakes, wheel bearings, seals, hubs, brackets, locker, truss(if needed), you can easily hit the $1000 mark. Of course the gears, bearing kit, locker and truss are all optional, saving you quite a bit. However, with 2.70something gears, it will be a dog. New brakes, u-joints and brackets are a must. Lockouts are really worth it too. Maybe the wheel bearings and seals are in usable shape still. Its also important to think about if you have to have someone gear it and if you have access to a welder or you are doing that yourself.

You see I'm weighing the extra cost of building these against doing anything with my low pinion d30 and 8.25. I want to regear, so that price is the same whether its my current axles or new ones. My d30 isn't locked so its not like I'm losing trail capability by not locking the d44 right away, I could upgrade that later. I realize all the break stuff will need to be replaced, seals and bearings too, but my axles probably needs those anyway. It does adds up but I really don't think its too bad.

I also, don't see anyway too learn how to do all this stuff without just doing it. I have a welder, but also have someone with more experience that would help me out if i needed it.

Just pick up the 60 I posted... You'll spend about the same amount building it, you can build it while still riding around on what you have, and have a stronger axle in the end...

I'm picking these up Thursday night. Whether it takes me 2,3,6,12 months to finish building them. They will be built on a budget considering. No chromo shafts, arbs, or high steer...yet
              Simple parts list

              Yukon 4.88 gears
              front-$210
              rear-$210
              Master install kits
              front-$125
              rear-$100
3.92&up carriers (wont have money for full case lockers for a while anyway)
front-$95 Thick cut gears? Would save me $120 on buying new carriers, the gears themselves are 35 more
Rear-$95 But would they stop me from using a full case locker in the future?
              Total=$835

              TNT front axle truss-179.95
DS Upper Control Arm Mount (+ $62.95)
PS Upper Control Arm Mount (+ $73.49)
              OTK Trac-bar Mount (+ $73.49)
HD Coil Mounts w/ Shock mnts. & Fact. TB mnt. (+ $119.95)
HD Lower Control Arm Mounts (+ $46.95)
              Total truss/all brackets=$556.78

Rear d44 simple swap kit -$120

              rims-soft 8's in proper bolt pattern-$208

Steering will most likely work from my d30(jcr 1 ton) If not I will only need a new tie rod taped to receive the TRE's.

It adds up but building my current axles would cost the same. This cost will also be set off a little by selling my locked 8.25 and d30.

                        I .
if ya get it with the steering, its already over the knuckle and same size ends as chevy one ton. its pretty beefy. you can just ream out your pitman arm and it will bolt in (i would reccoment a drop waggy arm though, it has the throw to match the dana44 knuckles and give you back some turning radius)

                        4. Whats the deal with outer knuckles and brakes and stuff? I have read a lot about ford, Chevy, dodge stuff all being interchangeable?
i wouldnt worry about ring and pinion strength. ive broken like 7-8 shafts, some locking hubs, a detroit locker all before i broke my ring and pinion. and where it broke, i was asking for it. entire right front tire wedged in an undercut with too much skinny pedal.. also i have 5.38's. so my pinion is even smaller than a 4.88.

keep the chevy outers. good brakes, all the parts are cheap and the most common of all 44 outers. the only upgrade i'd do to the outers is maybe get some flat top knuckles and run highsteer, but i havent had an issue with the the height of the steering as otk anyway.

and don't let the fact that i broke so much shit on it scare you. thats over a 5 year period of running this axle in 3 rigs. and i do stupid things with it.
