so i suppose a 96 cherokee classic isnt supposed to have a 231 t-case in it? thats what ive been reading anyway. but heres the deal, thought i was hearing some brake noise coming from the drums in the back of my jeep. turns out it wasnt that at all. looks to me as though the rear drive shaft is binding under hard braking or wheelin...im almost positive theres no SYE on the yeep and its got a 4.5" RE AAL kit...thats bad right

do you have a transfercase drop? if not then yes you need an SYE and fwiw the sale will have a tin tag on it that will tell you exactly what it is.

hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like what's leaking is your speedo sensor and you're right, there's no SYE

okay, well i know for sure the front axle needs a new pinion bearing. and a seal for sure, cause thats bleeding like a stuck pig. and it most certianly needs a rear cv shaft. would that kind of pressure on the rear shaft cause my tcase to pop out of 4lo as well? cause thats happened a few times. if youre on level ground it doesnt do it. soon as you either climb something or put it off level...it slips out and hits neutral.

if you have the options for full time 4 wheel and part time 4 wheel high and low then it's a 242. If you only have the options for 4 wheel high and 4 wheel low then it's a 231

oh im sure its a 231, prolly shoulda clarified that one sorry its most certainly an NP231 but the guy blew up the 242 that was in it so he swapped out for a 231. adjusting the linkage involves loosening the trunion bolt and shimming the shift lever while its in 4lo then adjusting as necessary and re-tightening correct?

to adjust the linkage on my wrangler with np231 there was a threaded rod section on the t-case that you adjusted the nut on.

if you continue to have issues, replacing the complex linkage setup with a simple setup using small heim joints and threaded rod

hahah well i fixed it, just needed to be nudged a little, no more falling outta 4wd and also pulled out the speed sensor to find that the moron before me didnt orient the sensor properly and the hold down bracket wasnt getting a proper bite on it, so seems solid now! thanks for the help gentlemen

mid 90's s10 np231 shifter tab which flips the it up, weld up s10 linkage hole, drill for proper diameter. connect linkage and adj. simplifies everything instead of having part of the shift linkage on the body and other half on t-case which causes binding issues when flexing sometimes.

theres more then 1 write up kicking around. i think ktmracer419 had it this way on his cherokee.
