  • AIRBAG...?????

    OK...

i was in an accident like a year ago and my Mother has been on my case cuz the airbag went off and i never replaced it. well the other day i got home and she had a new airbag sitting on the table said she picked it up from her mechanic and wanted me to get it installed so i would be "safe". she must not have seen my jeep lately . N E way, i talked to a mechanic about gettin the airbag installed and he asked weather i had a "clock spring" or a "sensor type" deployment system for the airbag. I have no idea what that means. something about haveing to reset my computer or replace the sensor or the new one would just go off again. why he doesent know this information is beyond me hes the mechanic. so n e one wanna offer up some info on this situation????

my jeep is a 96 cherokee sport

96 is mechanical engagement. It doesnt need ecu reset. There are no electronics in it.

        Taken from Pirate4x4:

95 and 96 XJ's use a mechanical airbag. If your has an electrical connection it isn't for a '95 or '96 XJ

        Here's the recall

        No. 639
        April, 1995

To: All JeepĀ® & Eagle Dealers
Subject: Safety Recall #639 -- Driver's Air Bag
        Models:
1995 Model Year Jeep Cherokee (XJ) Vehicles

A small number (about 1 in 2,500) of driver's side air bag modules may have been assembled without an arming lever. If the arming lever is missing, the air bag will not deploy in the event of a frontal impact accident. To correct this condition, the air bag must be inspected, and those air bags found without an arming lever must be replaced.

IMPORTANT: Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer new vehicle inventory. Federal law requires you to complete this recall service on these vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also consider this requirement to apply to used vehicle inventory, and should perform this recall on vehicles in for service as determined by using DIAL System Function 70.

Details of this service action are explained in the following sections.

        Service Procedure Videotape
No videotape of the service procedure for this recall will be provided.

        Dealer Notification & Vehicle List
Involved dealers: Each dealer to whom involved vehicles were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same street address) will receive a copy of this dealer recall notification letter and a list of the involved vehicles by first class mail.

The Vehicle List is arranged in Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to Chrysler are also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of involved vehicles.

All other dealers: Each Jeep & Eagle dealer who does not receive a Vehicle List will receive a copy of this dealer recall notification letter by first class mail.

        DIAL System Function 70
All involved vehicles will be entered to DIAL System Function 70 at the time of recall implementation for dealer inquiry by VIN as needed.

        Parts
Important: Due to the small number of air bag modules expected to require replacement, no parts will be distributed initially to dealers for this recall. Dealers are requested to order parts only for vehicles containing air bag modules found without an arming lever as indicated in the Special Parts Supply Message.

Air Bag Module Packages, Recall PN CCH06390, may be ordered at dealer cost to support demand. FAX parts orders to (810) 497-0980 and parts shipment will be expedited via special handling. This recall package will NOT be available through the normal DIAL parts order system.

Each parts package contains the following components:

        Quantity
        Description

        1

        Air Bag Module

        1

UPS Hazardous Material 5 Part Shipping Paper

        1

        Return Address Label

        1

        Dealer Shipping Instructions

        Owner Notification and Service Scheduling

All involved vehicle owners known to Chrysler are being notified of the service requirement by first class mail. They are requested to schedule appointments for the service with their dealers. A copy of the owner notification letter is attached.

Enclosed with each owner notification is an Owner Notification Form. The involved vehicle and recall are identified on the form for owner or dealer reference as needed.

        Service Procedure
WARNING: THE INVOLVED VEHICLES UTILIZE A MECHANICAL AIR BAG SYSTEM. BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE OR INSTALL THE AIR BAG, YOU MUST FIRST DISARM THE AIR BAG FIRING MECHANISM. FAILURE TO DO SO COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE INJURY.

Position the vehicle with the steering wheel centered and the tires straight ahead.
Note: If vehicle is equipped with a tilt column, move steering wheel to its lowest position.

Remove the arming screw cap from the steering wheel back cover using a small flat blade screw driver (Figure 1)
From outside the vehicle, reach through the drivers window and rotate the arming screw counter-clockwise. Do NOT use power driven tools! Back off the screw until the head is about one inch above surface of the steering wheel back cover (Figure 2).
Note: The arming screw has a built in stop that prevents the bolt from backing all the way out.

Remove the four air bag module mounting nuts from the back of the steering wheel (Figure 3).
Note: A nut-blocker mechanism prevents removal of the upper two mounting nuts until the air bag arming screw has been raised to the disarm position, as instructed in step 3.

Remove the driver's air bag from the steering wheel
With the air bag in the upright position, locate the black plastic cover on the back side of the air bag module (Figure 4)
Looking down from the top side of the air bag module, closely inspect the opening on the top side of the black plastic cover for the presence of an arming lever as shown in Figure 5.
Caution: Do NOT insert any objects into the arming lever opening or depress the arming lever. This will arm the air bag and could cause accidental deployment and possible injury.

Note: Since both, the arming lever and the plastic cover are black, use a bright light when conducting this inspection.

If the air bag module HAS an arming lever as shown in Figure 5a, proceed to step 9 to reinstall it.

If the air bag module DOES NOT HAVE an arming lever as shown in Figure 5b, the air bag MUST BE REPLACED. Order an air bag module, then proceed to step 8.

IF THE AIR BAG DOES NOT HAVE AN ARMING LEVER as shown in Figure 5b, it must be returned to the air bag manufacturer. Use the replacement air bag packaging material and follow the Dealer Shipping Instructions provided in each package for return shipment.
Install the air bag into the steering column and torque the four mounting nuts to 90 in-lbs. (10 N•m) (Figure 3).
From outside the vehicle, reach through the drivers window and rotate the arming screw clockwise until the head of the screw is below the surface of the steering wheel back cover hole. Do NOT use power driven tools! Torque the arming screw to 25 in-lbs (3 N•m) (Figure 2).
Caution: Arming screw MUST BE TORQUED to 25 in-lbs (3 N•m) to assure that air bag is properly armed.

Install the arming screw cap into the steering wheel back cover (Figure 1).

if the horn still works then the clockspring is ok and shouldn't need to be replaced. Does the airbag module in the center console only apply to 97+ xj's? If it does have one, it may need to be replaced also, but if not then all it should need is the new airbag to be hooked up.
