i have been rocking my 8.25 like nobodies buisness, but it's not happy. it's howling slams when you hit the gas, and once again when you let off. it's donzo. i'm looking at either a 8.8 or 44, whats the pros and cons of both. or maybe i'll do a dana 35

both are good axles 8.8's are easier to find, have disc's and are strong yet have a weak stock carrier, XJ44's are bolt-in more aftermarkets available but can be hard to find and usual go for more $, it really depense on whats available to you for the best price.

also 8.8 has larger ring gear and larger 31 spline shafts vs 30 spline in the dana 44, but the 8.8 is a c-clip axle vs the 44 wich has bearing retainers that will hold your wheel in should you break an axleshaft, some 8.8 have a trac-loc wich is better than an open diff. dana 44 is bolt in too if you cant fab, there is a ton of aftermarket support with whatever axle you go with.

      * 8.8 can be had with 4:10 ratio also, find a 4:10 front and its cheaper than regearing

Alot of people run the 8.8. You have to do a bunch of things to get it into a xj, like change it to a spring over perches, weld on shock tabs, set the pinion angle (a big advantage). I run the 8.8 without the lsd and welded tubes and it's strong, but not happy with it being unlocked. Another thing is that the 8.8 will prolly be about 1/4 inch on each side narrower than the stock rear, so if you're not running the right b.s, you might have to get spacers.

            8.8
            Benefits:
            Larger ring gear
            Thicker tubes
            31 spline
            Availability
            Disc brakes
iirc runs same carrier for all gear ratios

            Disadvantages:
c-clip but the rotor will hold shaft in if you break one
            Less ground clearance
Not exactly Jeep width roughly 1 inch narrower
            Not bolt in
            flange

            D44
            Benefits:
Bolt in available if you have a xj
            More ground clearance
            Larger aftermarket support

            Disadvantages:
            Drum brakes
            30 spline
            smaller ring gear
            Smaller tubes

            both have huge aftermarket support

i would highly recomend an 8.8. they're real strong, disc is nice, and the fab you have to do is not super difficult. i just put on in my tj this summer and it was a pretty big job for my buddies and i who are relatively unskilled in all of the areas that you need experience in to do the work. mine was about $222 to pick up at chuck and eddie's.

go 8.8 for the above stated reasons. thats all i got for ya. Fuck it, just get a Dana 35, wheel it till it breaks, then replace it with something stronger. D35's can be had for free and are disposable.

be a bad ass, find a old 9 inch rear like the one doug has.
No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

lol, coming from the guy who bought another XJ only to rarely drive it and get a WJ to drive instead. I just skipped the XJ part altogether
