school me on rear lockers

    Never ran an actual locker however ran my 8.8 with the factory LSD carrier (supposedly Weak) then welded it and couldnt break it. On the street your get tire chirp round corners and body roll. With a lunch box you should be fine Ive driven friends jeeps with lunchboxes and the aussie seems to be smoother then the lockright IMHO. Also if you didnt already get your 8.8 buy one with an open carrier the lunch box lockers are cheaper.

      With an aussie you can always go back to an open carrier for winter, etc, just save the spider and side gears. I never liked how any locker drove on the street, (I have had Powertrax, Detroit, spool) that is why I stuck with an open rear diff in my current rig. If I start wheeling it more I might get an aussie but I would probably take it out if I knew I wasn't going to wheel for a while. I don't think a locker is drastically worse in the snow or rain they are just kind of annoying to me after a while. Although eveything I every had a locker in is/was fairly light in the rear.

        Removing the locker every other season is Exceptionally Strange and a lot of work. If you want to do what Owen just said, I'd suggest getting a Selectable Locker, like an ARB or an E-Locker.

          Alright thanks all im going to look into it see what prices i can get a aussie for. If i hate it that much ill pull it out sell it and save for a arb which i really want. I might wait to do my gears and stuff to see how much cash i can get. I have alot of jeep stuff to sell for a friend he is throwing me some cash for doing it and i have some of my own parts to sell if i find a good arb used deff go with that. if not getting an aussie any thing i should look for when buying a used locker ?

              Sorry for the hijack but, should people lock the front or rear first? what one is more beneficial? I was planning on locking the front, and when i change the gear fluid each year, i was just going to swap in my spiders/swap in the lunchbox.

                I've always heard locking the rear first is the way to go, I know for me when it comes time to re-gear and lock, only the rear is getting locked.

                    i know jon just tried to get an aussie and it seems theyre on backorder as the few places we checked (including aussie themselves) didnt have any

                    as far as im aware it isnt out of the ordinary for them to be out of stock of em

                      It definitely takes alittle getting used to driving on the road, once you drive around with it for a week or so you can predict what its going to do. Parking lots and tight turns can be a pain IF you let off the gas and get back on it cuz then it locks.
                      I've never had a problem in the snow or rain. No breaks on the trail. Aussie

                        sounds good if i end up locking the front than i will do a arb or something but it sounds like im going with a aussie right now i just want atleast one locker still need to find a d44 or 8.8 though so i can get the axle build going. think with 35s 4.88s and the stock 8.8 31 axle shafts or d44 will hold up to it ?

                            I run stock shafts in my 44 havent broken them yet, but I did twist one.

                              I do not ease up on my jeep and have wheeled/ daily driven my jeep locked with my rear aussie for 4 years and front aussie for 2 or so years. Never had an issue breaking the aussie and I have blown front and rear ring gears and a few front axles too. I honestly don't know how you can really offroad without a locker and the thought of having one tire not working (open diff)drove me insane.

                              I have no issues making tight corners at slow or high speeds and the worst that happens if it locks making a tight low speed turn is it chirps the tires. Slippery conditions like snow and ice i prefer a locker because i know exactly what will happen with my foot on the throttle and can compensate for any sliding that may occur(usually doesn't)

                              Just today i wheeled my jeep(locked front and rear with aussies) with my friend who has a chevy colorado (open/open) we have the same tires and I could go anywhere in the snow where he had to make several runs at some grades and we both run KM2's. We ultimately turned around because he couldnt make it any farther (aka sliding off a mountain with baby and gf not an option apparently)

                              So this may be a redundant post but just get an aussie and look back at this thread in a year and laugh at your noobness...we have all been there.

                                FWIW, try and find someone who blew up their Aussie'd 35 and snag that shit. Throw it in the front and you're golden.
