  • Removing axle bearing race - rear d44

Anyone have any tips for getting the race out of the axle tube that the wheelbearing rides on on the axle shaft before i go hitting prying needlessly? It's in there like a bastard.

The only time I have ever seen one taken out was with Sam in a comfort inn parking lot in hazleton and we used a dremel to cut it out

Apparently the wheelbearing for d44s for the xj (and whatever else) was redesigned to have the bearing itself be self enclosed, instead of the taper bearings riding on a separate race that sits in the axle tube at the end of it...so i have to get the old race out.

slide hammer is the best way to do it. or put a really long pry bar in through the center section would work too. Just gotta catch the inner lip. however im not sure if you took the R&P out or not.

My roommate has the slide hammer to do it. Im gonna see you enough this month maybe we can work something out?

97 TJ that I think is pretty neat.

he said he doesnt wanna lend it out for a while because he uses it for work since he works at a shop. if we could somehow do it in 1 weekend than that would work :/ but that would be a pain in the ass

Those things suck, they will come out with the right prybar. The one I use is a 6 footer with a curled end. Has worked in the past. Slide hammer is a much better tool to use though.

if u dont wanna wait, i can get it out. The dremel trick always works great for me, i cut an x in the race, then once that section is out, it pretty much slides out.

Tomorrow after i get outta school??
No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

i dont wanna ruin it, because my spare shaft doesnt have the new style bearing on it, so if i need to change my shaft i need the race to go back in for the spare

plus its supposed to rain like a mother f'er tomorrow

i was told it was redesigned to be this way....only reason i say that is because i dont think i have ever had a bearing pressed on my 44 shaft that wasnt an exposed taper bearing until now

i could be wrong. either way ill prob end up cutting it out
