the front i just drew a line on top of the flare, removed it and cut along the line. the rear you cut slits up to the pinch seam (not past) and fold them up

i trimmed mine with a dremel because i was a stickler. i know other guys have used an angle grinder with decent results. sawzall moves the fender around a fuck load, not sure how guys use that to make a really nice cut (or even if its possible)

as far as how much, u can see in the pictures where the body line is and reference off of that a bit

i laid blue painters tape out over the fender surface i was gonna cut, and cut through that...helped prevent chipping/kept things a little cleaner.

I used a saber saw, which is like a dainty sawzall. Worked nice, just hold the fender with your hand just ahead of where the blade is, wont move at all. I'd also go for the keep it low attitude. I see Jeeps basically with my setup but running ungodly amounts of lift like over 6 inches and I usually outperform them. I have 3 on 33's and couldnt ask for more.

I was super nervous about trimming my fenders for the first time some 4 years ago, so I had one of my buddies do it for me and I watched him. Second time around was a lot easier. I drew a line over my existing flare, took the flare off and then cut to that line. I used a 4.5" die grinder and it worked good. Use blue painters tape or the paint can chip and come off past your cut.

I use a air nobler which worked great, just remember to cover your tire to protect from
            metal shavings

that was the next question...how long until they get bashed to shit from tire contact?

anyone have something to strengthen the edge like putting in a rolled bead or some tube fender set up?

if you bumpstop them correctly, the tires wont hit them

my fenders were never bashed in by my tires

Mine just lightly touch the fender when the bumpstop engages, no big deal. Hasnt harmed either the tire or the fender. Once in a while it makes a funny sound if they do with the wheel turned.

I don't think my front tires contact the fender but we will see once new tires are put on. 3.5" lift with 33's

Ive got my grand on 33x10.50s on 5" of lift not trimmed and as said here trimming provides a better tire clearance not lift height, I need to trim and rebumpstop my ZJ.
I've since ditched the heavy rear bumper and roof rack and actually sit at a true 5" of lift now. The tires still rub however at flex inside the wheel wells.
