What exactly did you find with the exhaust? I don't think I'm seeing it

haha yeah just realized you can't see in the picture but the muffler was scraped through from rocks or something, had a big hole in the back of the muffler that made a sort of fart sound, and the hangers were nearly rotted off the tail pipe. I could have reused the tail pipe but it looked like it had been boogered a few times alrady.

          Little more progress:

Here is the RuffStuff 8.8 swap kit which includes some sweet weld on leaf spring perches. It's a nice kit but I did drill out the 3 center holes on the spring plate, they were a tad on the small side.

after looking at the new perches, I decided to remove the shims that came on the rough country springs for better fitment. The centering pins are now too long, so I am going to pick up some 3/8" allen cap screws that should work just fine.

Since I dont have an output yoke to work off of (slip yoke np231) and it is spring under ( touch to compress the suspension to ride height without bolting the axle to the springs I decided to basically transpose the angles of the spring perches from a stock dana 35 to the 8.8, also figuring in what the shims would have given.

So I set the stock housing up and got it to the point where the pinion angle (relative to level) 0 degrees (used an angle finder) then I measured the angle of the perches relative to level with the shims sitting on them (16 degrees)

Then I setup the 8.8 and leveled the pinion and set the perches to 16 degrees, spaced 40.25" apart. I like to measure off the brake backing plate mounts to determine if I am centered. Then I tacked them on for now, since I consider this a crude method of setting pinion angle

SERIOUSLY I wish i knew how do to that kind of stuff. I would sit there, look at the axles, not know what to do or how to figure it out and cry or say fuck it and pay someone like you to do it. Great work OWEN.

I think i recall you saying you want to run some 33s on it right? What kind of wheels are you going to use? I think this thing would look amazing with a set of stock jeep wheels with wheel spacers. My fav would be Rubicon Moabs(16" and a 285/75 tire) like i used to have or a nice set of ravines (15" and a 33) would be sick on that YJ.

Tires are 33x10.50R15 BFG... already have em

Rims will be oem 15"... Would love the Rubi wheels but they are $$$. I have 3 different sets of OEM wheels, maybe I will do a poll to see what everyone thinks I should run.

Ive always been a fan of stock silver 5 spoke steelies with wheel spacers on lifted jeeps. I think they are simple, look good and are cheap to replace. Just sucks they are only 7" wide because the bubble 12x50s alot. Id rock that too.

Well fast way forward... my computer got a virus and my camera ran out of batteries, I was busy late last week and over the weekend (instead of going to OER ) but the axles, lift, and tires are done!

It is a great jeep, but nothing too cutting-edge here so you are not missing much by skipping all the details but here are a few highlights:

                    Setting up 8.8:

It took two tries to get the pinion angle perfect, I was off 3 degrees once everything was bolted in place, so I knocked the tacks off and tried again. No driveline vibes at all whatsoever, but eventually I want to get an SYE and CV driveshaft to lose the transfer case drop.

I wound up re-using the stock rear shocks and setting the perches up and out of harms way...

Made up new hard lines, reused the old hoses. I rebuilt the parking brake drums, installed new rotors and pads. It came out really nice and clean.

I still have to order up the e brake cables from M.O.R.E.

Up front I wound up replacing the ball joints after I stumbled on a bad one (yea I stripped one caliper boss on the steering knuckle, I am a dumbass)

And in doing so realized the ball joints on my old axle were bad as well. The new ball joints really tightened it up alot.

So here it is, I chose to run the factory alloys. I get a lot of "it looks great...thats like how they should have been stock." I still have to figure out how to mount the full size spare on the jeep, and come up with a rear bumper, all while being considerate to the fact that I need to be able to put some kind of a bike rack on it. The rough country springs actually rides really nice, and the new exhuast sounds good. The 4.10s make it feel like it should, it feels like I added some horse power to it. The rear discs also work great. I am really happy, it is a fun jeep to drive everyday and add some simple mods. Stay tuned for more.

That looks Fucking Bad ass. I love the classic wrangler/xj alloy wheels too. keep it just the way it is. Id love to bomb around in that as a DD.

As far as the rear spare tire goes, they sell a plate that raises and pushed out the stock spare tire mount so it will clear the rear bumper. Alot of weight for the stock rear gate but cheaper then a separate swing out tire carrier/bumper. Unless you build a bumper with swing out on it. The mount is a little pricey though.
