  • New Marlin Project.

    Project Longbow.

When some of the engineers left Marlin most recently, a few of them sold some spare parts to myself and my boss, but they Gave me my newest project; A stainless Marlin 1895 receiver and floorplate. The engineer told my boss that it was a proofed receiver that he had been using for dimensions for the past few years and that he no longer had a use for it.

Well, I'm putting it to use now, problem being that I had to piece this thing together from scratch. I had the receiver and the floorplate, the hammer pivot screw and the bottom plate screw. I had a bolt, but missing the internals, so after digging around a bunch of Parts boxes, I was able to find the firing pin, firing pin block spring and whatnot and pieced one all together.

I quickly learned too that you could use a 336 extractor with the 1895, you just have to grind off that adverse nub so it will fit inside the receiver when locked up. It's quite a simple procedure and good to know if something ever happens to you extractor, you can easily replace it. The bolt dimensions are the same diameter wise, just the face of the bolt is custom fit for each caliber.

I obtained a barrel through Numrich, a 22" 45-70 Microgroove barrel and with some extremely minor fitting, I was able to torque the barrel right down to spec and it lines up perfectly. I took apart another 45-70 that was in the shop and just to inspect everything, I took some major internals and placed them within my own action and played around, making sure the bolt cycled fine and ejection worked.

Well, in the end those parts weren't mine, but a week later a member from Marlin Owners sent me a spare straight grip stainless Lever for nothing and with that, I fitted my new locking block to the gun and checked headspace. Everything was good to go.

Another member from Marlin owners also stopped by my shop and gave me a slew of parts including a hammer, forend cap and spring, buttstock and other good stuff.

I also have a Magazine Tube from a Marlin 1895 cowboy gun, but being it is too long right now, I need to cut it down to match the 22" barrel that is on the receiver now. I still need the magazine cap retainer and mill a new slot into the barrel as I want a full length magazine tube under that 22" barrel.

Anyway, I was able to find an old forend to match the buttstock well enough and with some fitting, was able to get the new forend on.

This is all I have so far:

I will be leaving the Lever, receiver and the floorplate in the white as they are stainless, but everything else will be a matte blue. I think the contrast between the stainless and the blued parts will look awesome.

More updates as they come, which hopefully will be sooner than later.

              • Though I am in the midst of that other project, the Two Tone 45-70, I figured I'd spend my lazy Sunday today at the shop playing with my 1894 Cowboy Limited in 45 Colt.

Well, I've been throwing around the idea of actually modifying it for a while and since most of my plans this wonderful Sunday had fallen through, I decided to do it before I decided against it.

Here is what I started off with.

From there it was the usual. I removed the stock and forend assembly and pulled the barrel off the action. Measured out to 16.75" and cut right there. I chucked it up and indicated the barrel in the lathe to cut the fresh hacksaw marks right out and recrown it.

The process was painless really, thought the most time consuming part of the Build. I could crown it by hand, but I would rather not. I love my Lathe and I use it with almost every project.

Once the crown was all set, all I needed to do was recut 2 new dovetails at the front of the barrel: one for the front sight and one for the magazine tube stud. I moved the barrel on over to the Mill and set up a 1/4 mill bit to start the dovetail itself. I set the depth of .080" and ran it straight across.

Then I followed it with the dovetail cutter. I know, I'm a cheater.

You essentially get a perfect dovetail, but it is just a little small. I did this to both sides of the barrel and then proceeded to use a dovetail file (a triangular file with a single safety edge to ensure the dovetail slot does not go deeper into the barrel, but rather you only cut the left OR right of the dovetail) and fit both the stud and the front sight.

After that, I modified the magazine tube and since it doesn't have the bulge like the 45-70 tube, I didn't have to redrill the holes for the magazine stud, instead I just cut the excess off of the rear of the magazine tube itself and fitted it to the action perfectly.

Then Will and Nicole arrived at the shop and we got Hot Chocolate and BLTs at the Deli.

Then they dropped me off at the shop and I put it all together. The 1894 'Urban' Cowboy Limited

Right now the gun hold 8 rounds of the LeverEvolution in the magazine tube, but the 9th round goes in 7/8 of the way. I'm going to try and squeeze that ninth round in there by either trimming the magazine spring just the slightest or the follower itself to make it an even 9+1 in the chamber.

I do plan on rebluing the gun itself with a Matte finish only because I do not like the factory bluing and I carelessly put a few scratches in the barrel when chucking it up in the lathe. I also want to replace the leather on the lever itself with some parachord and find a different stock and paint it black. The wood on this gun is pretty nice and I'd feel bad ruining it...but I may also end up keeping the wood on there. Time will tell what I do, but I have a feeling I'm going to be shooting this gun a lot this season.

                        • Phil I am absolutely in love with this rifle. I dont know a lot about AR's, out of curiosity how much could you build a duplicate of it for?

Not that expensive, if you really are serious about it, PM me and I'll start linking you parts and whatnot.

                            • Anyway, quick update.

I finished collecting the parts I need and I decided to mock everything up today. Everything works fine except for Feeding, which needs to be remedied by adding some Material to the lever so when the action opens, the carrier actually brings the round up to the chamber instead of half way there.

Fit a new hammer to the rifle as well and installed a new blued trigger and some iron sights that may just end up being there for looks.

I also put the scope on the rifle to see if the scope would clear the base. I purchased Leupold Extra Low rings and the turret assembly on the scope was actually contacting the base itself, so used my total lack of Fabrication Skills milled some of it away.

I then assembled the whole rifle for pics before I took it apart. I'm going to start prepping everything for bluing tomorrow as well as bead blasting the receiver and floorplate. I also have to finish fitting the lever, but that will come after I blue everything tomorrow.
