Different spring rates i believe. or the cut screws up the "springing" integrity IIRC.

with that being said i run cut 4.5" rusty's springs that run about 3" and have had not a lick o problems. but i wouldn't reccomend it.

Id run cut springs in a pinch but i wouldn't look at it as a permanant solution which im sure your not. I'd just keep my eyes out for a good deal on the ideal springs

I planned on using cut coil springs in the front of my XJ, until Steve convinced me of otherwise. Quoted from my build thread-

but I have to comment on the cutting of the coils. I definately dont agree with this. When the front suspension is unloaded, the coil is at full extention with no weight on it. For example, if you come off a rock and that spring is unloaded and you need to put weight on it, it now has an extra 1"-2" to travel or whatever you cut off to finally load that spring. The reason it isnt that good is because your spring isnt able to control the body until it gets weight on it. Just my $ .02

that makes no sense what hes saying if i read it correct is that if the spring becomes unloaded it takes longer for it to reload what the hells the diff if its cut or not. any spring when its unloaded will have some give b4 it will sit as the weight is put back to it. cutting it only sets ride hight. now if you cut alot off you are changing the spring rate some that ill agree with.

i see no issues with running cut coils. it is my permanent solution. if you wanna furthur discuss the issue of cut coils please take it to the tech section and not load my build thread thank you.

If youre happy with it then great but youre changing the spring rate. If its permanent then cool its your build, I know its a budget project, plus its not my Jeep so have fun

so you wanted to drop 700 on new long arms but not find a set of 3 inch springs for 50 bucks? and yes you are changing the spring rate and integrity of the coil.

not that big of a deal cutting coils so long as you understand what you did to the spring.

do some math:

11,250,000 times the wire diameter to the 4th power divided by 8 times the active number of turns times the mean diameter cubed is spring rate.

the 241 lb/in RE coils and moderately rated (255/70) 5150s i'm running is comfortable, but theres still room to stiffen up if i wanted. i wouldnt go much more than 260-270 on 3" of lift, and then i'd run a slightly stiffer, 275/78 or even tad stiffer rebound, in bilstein language.

What Steve said makes perfect sense to me, but you seem like you already have your mind made up like most things, so go do as you please.

UPDATE.

well i managed a decent wheelable rig for under 1k. granted its not perfect but it works. time to improve upon my creation. from this point on it will no longer be about low budget or half assing.

i'd been working part-time 25hr/week seasonal at costco and got the lay-off jan 2nd, as was exspected. got a new job right away been working at Emmitt's auto on campbell ave in west haven. full time 7am-6pm 11 hour days $10/hr under the table for now. im slowly going to be building up the bolt-on parts list for this jeep so that WHEN it finaly blows up, rusts out, w/ei can just get another body and transfer parts.

SO....

purchased a lockright for the d30 today.

getting a welded 8.25 next weekend.

ordereing a brandy new set of km2's. got a $60 rebate from costco on them.

buying calebs back bone system.

searching now for a winch.

decided im going to mount the new km2's on the girls stock silver tj wheels and do a 2nd fresh coat of brown on the jeep and from the rocker to about 1/4 up the door spray with black under coat once it gets warm ofcourse

d30 lockright is schedualed to arive wed, 1/13
